Thats interesting. I dont do wireless trans so I never knew if wireless would add your home NPA or the NPA of your current location.

It's not mandatory in my area, but that's the way I program numbers into my cellphone.

NYC switched to 10 digit dialing a few years ago. Of course, we have like what, 5 area codes?

there's no way I'm giving up my 201 number, though! it's the first area code ever.

973 can suck it!

Not in all of NJ. 908 doesn't have an overlay. My parents had to give up their 201 number years ago when 908 was created.

Ever see the Seinfeld episode where Elaine didn't want to give up her 212 number? :D

I actually remember when that happened since, i grew up with 201, and then we got that silly 908 number.
good ol' dirty jerse...

You guys don't remember dialing just 3 numbers to speak with your friends?

I'm sure it still works for number in the same prefix/NPX. Just dial the extension or the last 4 digits of the number.

What pisses me off is not dialing 10 digits, it's the fact that area code 905 covers such a big swash of land. Some of it is local from 416, but some are not. The calls will no go through til you figure it out. So if it is a local call from 416 and you dial a 1 in front, no dice and vice versa. Annoys the hell out of me. Why can't the phone company just loop it properly?

Area codes exist for a reason. They had to break up a lot of the area codes because they were running out of phone numbers.

Heck they had to RADICALLY change the rules for area codes 12 or so years ago because they ran out of area codes.

Wasn't mandatory until 98 (I think) here in SW PA. Used to be 412 all over, and then they gave about 50% of the pop 724 area codes and made it mandatory to dial the area code before any number, even if you're calling your next door neighbor.

For the past year or so, I've been getting these random wrong number calls. The thing is, they were frequent (several a week), they were all looking for different people, and when I could get the person to talk (pretty rare) they all said that my number was on their caller ID. I puzzled over this and the fact that most of the calls had caller ID blocked. I thought maybe the phone company was giving out my number on caller ID when there was a screw up. Almost like my number was the error code. Or maybe I pissed someone off at the phone company.

It wasn't until the end of last year that I finally figured it out after getting someone to tell me the complete number they were dialing. Lets say I have phone number ABC-DEF-GHIJ. They were calling DEF-GHI-JXXX. In other words, they were forgetting to dial 1 and my first 6 numbers just happened to line up with an area code and prefix. I still don't know why most of them are caller ID blocked or Unknown, maybe its a regional thing (the destination they're trying to reach is in Jersey). I'd change my number but I've had this one for forever. Sucks...

I am FOR area code changes. I want distinct Area Code for long distance call and local call. I get a voicemail, the caller says 905, I don't know if I should dial 1 or not and that is just frustrating. Plus I almost always guess wrong :(

I get the same annoyance.. I live in a 905 area... i try to dial another 905 area and get a must dial 1+ because its LD, i work in a 416 area.. and some 905's are local and obviously some arent. But you dont know until you dial.

I also feel like ive been dialing area code + number for 15 years now. Whenever the Philly area switched over to the 10 digit dialing. It's 2nd nature to me. It throws me off when i DONT have to dial the area code.
