This isn't a thread crap, just a FYI:

Microsoft's AV works very well, doesn't try to mess with your system like Norton does (or did when I used it), and is even cheaper at $0 a year.

So, before you think you need a paid AV, consider the free one too.

Those are actually good prices for paid products.

I personally prefer the following free antivirus software:

AVG 2014

Avira 2014

MSE

Avast 2014

All excellent and completely free.

Just to further expand on that: I'm a big fan of Microsoft's AV (especially when used in conjunction with Malwarebytes Pro, for the realtime protection module) because it uses low system resources & is free (easy for end users to manage, no yearly renewals required!), but from a security standpoint, be aware that Microsoft's AV consistently ranks at the bottom of the barrel in testing:

Microsoft's AV is the only one in which I have been able to get my machine infected. I stay away from this and refuse to install it on my worst enemies machines. Check the Security forum before installing this POS.

I have also always used free AV's. I only posted as it is a pretty sweet deal for those that used paid AV's.

Kasperksy, Nod32 or Avira paid for $5 is very tempting. If I wasn't given an emsisoft anti-malware key I would be all over this deal.

Oh, and I just noticed the Webroot AV was for 3 PCs. I can't comment of the product though.

Of the paid ones you listed above i'd go for NOD32 above the others. Had many issues with Kaspersky, Norton, etc.

NOD32 has a nice clean interface and light on resources.

I am having issues with Kaspersky on a work machine as have a few of my coworkers. I use Avast free on my home machines and recommend it when people ask.

Me too, I have been using Avast for years, and it works great.

Link doesn't redirect in Firefox and Pale Moon. Don't see Avast in that offering, would stay far away from most of these.

I use Avira Free, but I'd still like to find a good antivirus that doesn't go bonkers with a false positive for keygens.

That is terribly annoying... why should I have faith in your antivirus app if it is incorrectly identifying a non-threat? Some of these even complain about legit freeware because of the installers used.

I use Avira and Avast, both free versions and they are fine but for those who like the paid versions this is a good deal.

Don't use AVG anymore, I have been hearing of too many breaches with updated AVG's from coworkers and classmates.

This is actually a good deal for Kaspersky. That is the only one I'd pay for. Speaking of freebies, you guys might want to check out BitDefender free edition.

First of all, to everyone who insist MS essentials is "good enough" for anything...

http://lifehacker.com/microsoft-admits-that-third-party-antivirus-is-more-eff-1441135677

"Microsoft Admits That Third-Party Antivirus Is More Effective Than MSE"

Second, free AV is good... but there is still even better AV out there if you are willing to pay for it.

I am a cheap bastard and don't.. but when I did use commercial software I swore up and down with kaspersky. Kaspersky offers Very good protection with excellent system performance.

I clicked on the kaspersky package offered and one thing struck me.. there is no expiration, it does not appear as if you are purchasing a one year liscense or anything of the type. Do you really get a life time install for one computer for 5 bucks?

I second this. It's the only one I've seen that allowed 2 machines' software to be ruined (customers' machines). I ran it for a while and got infected as well. Have never gotten infected with NOD32. I agree, it's a POS and I warn people every chance I get.

Another vote for NOD32. I've been using it for years and never had an issue. I have a 3 user license. Highly recommended by Leo Laporte. I won't use anything else.

Been using Comodo Internet Security free version for years and it has worked great for me. Sometimes it wants to stop you from running a new program, but just have to jump through some hoops.

No one ever mentions it, anyone else using it?

Working fine here in PM. Sorry, I can't help if the redirect isn't working. I added the following to my OP which should help.

Most people that get infected do so because they aren't following best practices for computer security. If you do something dumb, chances are you would get infected regardless of the AV product installed on your machine.

The problem with free products other than MSE is that they tend to be minefields of ads aimed at trying to get you to buy the company's paid product. It is annoying as hell.

The smart thing to do is use MSE until a good commercial product goes on sale for free after rebate. Such as...

Kaspersky Internet Security 2014 for 3 PCs

Eset Smart Security 2014 for 3 PCs

That isn't bad advice. Doing all your browsing in a Linux virtual machine running under Windows or OS X gives you great protection from internet malware while still allowing you to run a useful OS for everything else.

Damn that's a good idea, putting our quad cores to good use. VirtualBox is freeware too :D
