10.9 GB Windows Vista 64 bit Ulimate

To the people who are complaining Windows Vista is to big I have Windows Vista 64 bit Ulimate installed with a few programs as well. It is only using 10.9 GB of hard drive space. I expect it to use around 15 GB when all is said and done.

I'm amazed how cheap 1TB harddrives are not to meantion ram nowadays,I guess some people expect too much 😉.

keep in mind by default it will naturally use less space because the partition you have it on is already relatively small (30GB)

but of course people who complain about it are generally unaware of whats actually going on (not to forget that it really is a non issue as Mem already mentioned with ram and storage being so incredibly cheap these days)

Mem your right but you have to remember if you are using a (V)Raptor or a SSD the least space used the better because they are so expensive to get a lot of speedy space with. Sure there is a 300 GB Vraptor now but still having as much of that for games instead is pretty important. Games are very big now a days and depending on how many you play you need every little bit you can get. On the other had most applications you install don't take up to much space. Yeah some do like Photoshop but for the most part those are the few and in between.

If the V(Raptor) or a SSD could easily be had for a good price and at 500 GB to 1 TB sure it would be no problem. Just a side note I was able to get Windows Vista Ulimate this small with even some applications installed by disabling the paging file. I have 8 GB of ram why do I need a huge 8 GB page file? Still thinking of just reenabling it but it will take a good amount of the 30 GB partition so not sure yet. I think Windows Vista 64 bit basically only takes up as much of it needs of the 8 GB page file and grows as need be. Still I prefer to have the left over space for any applications I install or huge windows updates. Windows really grows after some updates.

Maybe but I never noticed it do that before when I had the page file enabled it was easily taking 15 to 16 GB alone without any windows updates. Plus system restore is disabled.

How are you getting that low number? Right now my Vista64 Ultimate system install is taking up about 28 gb.

space on those drives should not be an issue if you are using them solely as system drives. I've got my OS on my raptor (36gb 😱) and EVERYTHING else on my series of drives ranging from 80gb (documents) to 500gb (**movies**).

I am not using them solely as system drives though. My Raptor is used for OS and applications on one partition and games on the other. So you can see how I need ever little bit of space I need.

Simple turn off system restore and paging file. Also make sure to delete any parts of sp1 and sp2 of vista files you don't need.

Even after all that, your Windows\winsxs folder will grow and grow over time, and there's not a thing to be done about it.

Windows XP install was 2GB and when all you apps where installed you could create a single DVD image of your install.

If only BluRay would fall in price.

this. hence why i suggest using the raptor as strictly as system drive and get another bigger drive for your apps and games and such.

Yep I know. That is why the drive is not partitioned at only 15 GB. Room for growth. Most applications are not very big.

I see this happen a lot after windows updates.

Yes. Clean install. This is a HTPC so the only "programs" installed are a couple of codecs, the SPs, Adobe flash player, WinRAR ... and that's it.

Yeah but mine is only 10.9 GB. Ok well it is now 11.1 GB but that is only because I installed a few applications.

how? You have page and restore disabled? Fresh install of win7 uses about 14GB. Nothing disabled.
