10.7 Cats & Borderlands problem

Since installing 10.7, I can only play for about 45 minutes to an hour before the system almost completely locks up. It took a couple of minutes just to get to the task manager to take that picture.

As you can see, Borderlands is eating up memory and finally crashing the system.

Anybody else?

I have completely removed all old drivers and used a sweeper in safe mode etc. etc. and then reinstalled and still I get this.

Sounds like a memory leak, but just to follow standard troubleshooting protocol:

This problem occurred right after you updated to the 10.7's?
What driver revision were you using before (e.g. 10.x)?
Did you reinstall your old driver or the try the 10.7's again (it wasn't clear from your post)?
What did you use to uninstall the driver? ATI Express Uninstall usually works fine, but it might be worth it run Driver Sweeper instead.

Good luck with it.

This is immediately after installing the 10.7's. The driver notes specifically mention performance improvements with Borderlands so I thought I would try them out. I was using the 10.6's and I haven't tried reinstalling them yet. I will though.

Just FYI, I did a driver sweep and reinstallation before posting here and it found a lot of leftover that the uninstaller didn't get.

OK
10.6 back on and problem solved.
Been playing for about 1.5 hours and mem is staying right where it should etc. etc.

Oh well. If anybody else encounters this, at least they won't feel alone. 🙂

I just played the game for over an hour and did not face any issues. Mine is a 5750 though. Did you report this issue to AMD?

I had the same problem when i used 10.6. I am currently still on 10.5.
Will try 10.7 later today to verify it.

Don't bother. i can (sadly) confirm the issue with Borderlands and Cat 10.7 that i did not have with Cat 10.6.

Beware of Catalyst 10.7 if you play Borderlands. It appears to develop a severe memory leak that can happen after a few minutes of play. However, you might be able to resume playing with Ctrl+Alt+Del (a couple of times and while you are at it, take a look at the Task Manager).

Other than the memory leak and the continual lock-ups . . . 😛
. . . Borderlands's performance is better.
🙄

Yep. Sadly, Borderlands performance is better with 10.7's but, for me, it eventually crashes every time.
I am playing the game on my downstairs computer which is a C2Q 9450 @ 3.2 and a 5770 stock @ 1680x1050 and on the 10.6's that 5770 is right on the razors edge of playability with everything turned up. With 10.7's it was much smoother and I could notice that there was a lot less slowdown but alas...not meant to be. *sigh*

I posted this a couple other places and some people are also reporting 10.6 as having this issue. For me, 10.6 has been good but 10.5 has been consistently reported as good with Borderlands.

i am playing it with my rig in sig (5870 CrossFire) and it is *beautiful* with every setting fully maxed out. i believe i finished Borderlands (Level 36 Engineer) on Catalyst 10.3a and also on my GTX 480. i don't bother to bench with it because it is very light on PC resources.

When i heard about the issues, i had to check it out. Very frustrating; i am glad i finished the SP.

I wonder if it affect Crossfire setups, that's by coincidence the next game that I will play once I'm done with Bioshock 2, I might wait and play Singularity instead just in case...

ATI + Modded UT3 engine = BULLSH*T PROBLEMS. Guess that's what you get when you whore out a graphics engine.

I've got 10.7a and Xfire 5770's, and am not impressed with performance. Just thought I'd throw that in there. Or maybe that's just Xfire 5770's :\. 1920*1200 Max 4xAF 0xAA. I get lowered FPS in areas, and it makes the game very strange feeling to play. Default "feel" of the game isn't very nice either. Mouse is strange, might be smoothing. NVIDIA!

All you have to do is disable Catalyst AI to fix the borderlands crashing problem, posted that in some other thread around here but might as well put the solution in here as well.

Unfortunately ATi is known for cheap performance hardware and not their drivers. When I had Nvidia cards I would update every release, ATi I just wait until I have an issue or a few months have gone by.

I am using hd4850 with cat 10.7 in borderlands, played a ton last night and never a single crash. maybe it only happened to certain combination of 10.7 + card.

Edit: yes, I started to have some crashes, since I was doing chest runs, I only stay in game for like 5 min at a time didn't notice, now playing quests, I can only play like 10min before crashing.

Edit: I just reverted back to my trusty 10.5 and works now.

This memory issue is actually caused by catalyst ai in 10.7. Disabling catalyst AI will make the issue go away. I can now play borderlands on my 5850 for hours without crash.

Hmm no wonder I haven't been able to play the game for more than a few minutes. I thought maybe my system was overheating since it's been hot here. I've been using CCC to enable AA in-game so I'll just have to put up with not having AA to be able to actually play the damn game since I just got it during the recent Steam deal.

Fortunately Disabling Catalyst AI won't stop you from running ATI AA, they have nothing to do with each other as each have their own individual tabs; although I still don't care for application forced AA.

Makes for some pretty horrific performance on a 4850 🙁.

When you buy a ATI, you get a great product with dismal drivers. Period I dont care if its Cat 8 or Cat 10.7 . ATI drivers will always give you problems and you have to reinstall and uninstall 300 times. 🙁

I am playing on an Athlon II 240 and 4850 and when I first installed borderlands it would crash within minutes on 10.7 and give general protection faults.

if you look around on the internet you will see tons of theories on how to fix this. For me, I disabled Catalyst AI and it did not work. One forum suggested installing a new version of PhysX from Nvidia's website, that did not work. Tried deleting, uninstalling and reinstalling borderlands from steam, that did not work.

What finally worked for me is that I uninstalled PhysX (because my General Protection Fault was referencing a PhysX file) and then uninstalled the game from steam and deleted all folders for PhysX and Borderlands that were not auto uninstalled. I then installed borderlands again and it installed an older version of PhysX that it was shipped with. Problem solved.

My understanding is that the PC version has a variety of problems, some relating to 10.7 drivers, some relating to different and newer versions of PhysX not working with the game, and some just a straight up massive memory leak.

I also understand that if you are just playing for a few min and it crashes it is NOT the driver that is the problem, but if you play for longer periods of time and it crashes it IS the driver problem.

Frustrated the crap out of me for 2 days but I am now enjoying very smooth gameplay with all seeting on high and with 1920 x 1080. anyways thats my story here.

Cat 8 does not exist. Your exagerating problems with ATI drivers. Both ATI and Nvidia drivers have had plenty of issues and will continue to have issues. Nvidia released drivers that literally fried cards. ATI released drivers recently that broke Xfire in several games. These things happen, life moves on. Both companies these days have very good drivers generally speaking and are very comparable.

Borderlands performance on my computer is pretty iffy. Max 1920*1200 4xAF 0XAA, is pretty weak. There are spots where I am dipping in 25-30fps range. The last quest in the scag quarry was very 30fps prone. I've tried both 10.7a and a 10.8beta build(8.761). Both work about the same, the 8's maybe a little better. I've seen hints that it is a ATI driver issue, but I would have to be seeing almost constant 50fps or greater to not notice the slowdowns. It definitely affects play.

Some areas of the map are horrendously slow for no obvious reasons.....like the entrance plateu to skag quarry, looking at the gun shop in the main town.

It's pretty frustrating. I don't know if its the drivers or what. Should Crossfire 5770's produce better performance than that? Certainly not happy with 'em when it comes to Borderlands. Thoughts?

Got it on the steam 66percent off deal. Should have just stuck with the 360 version in the end(looks exactly the same minus resolution to me - had too 😀).
ATI's drivers are a little iffy. Between Starcraft 2 and Borderlands I am yet to be impressed.
