so, it looks like Apple wasn't pulling anything when they released the Time Capsule. A lot of people on teh IntarWebs seemed to be concerned that the reason Apple didn't include wireless/net backup in Leopard was so they could release Time Capsule.

Instead it simply looks like Apple is selling what is (in my opinion) a fairly affordable backup solution, if you are also looking to upgrade your home router. And since 1TB drives cost (on newegg) about 3-4 times as much as 500GB drives, it is nice that the price differential is not ridiculous. I thought it was $100, but it is actually $200, which... $500 for a wireless n router with built in 1TB drive is fairly decent if you think about it. And if they leave in the ability to attach another hard drive via the USB port, then that is just another plus. You can just keep adding space to it.

For the headache of not having to set anything up, it's completely worth the price. I just wish they had done RAID. It will be ideal, however, when I get my parents and grandparents converted over completely...easy backup & networking solution all-in-one ;)

Good for them, assuming this is true. I will still be buying a Time Capsule (I had been planning to buy an Airport Extreme literally the day of Macworld anyway, and the TC is a good value for what it is IMO), but I feel better about the fact that they are apparently not screwing over AE buyers - if they can make the TC, there is no reason they can't add this functionality to the OS.

Well, bear in mind that the functionality was in the early builds of the OS, it just wasn't in the final release. So at some point, they decided that it was too complex or too shaky or something. Some were theorizing that it was because they were going to release TC all along, and they didn't want a person's homebrew solution to eliminate the need for their's (Apple's).

If someone does get this, and if they can add another drive to it, then I am sold, I will be getting one of these. Wireless N and onboard storage, exactly what I would be using it for anyway.
