I'm on the 2nd floor and my neighbor is below me. I came home last night from Best Buy and decided to vacuum my carpet. My neighbor had his tv on or else I would have waited until the next day. Anyway, I vacuumed the carpet for about 3 minutes and he started to bang on the wall. I immediately stopped it and just went to bed.

So should I have waited until the next day or was he in the wrong? I feel that anything before 11pm is game.

If he's watching tv then screw him. It's your place, you can clean it if you like.

That's how I feel, but I think it's more then just the vacuuming. I have a very loud speaker system hooked up to my computer. It's the Logitech 450 watts 5:1 THX certified and yes I like to blast it. The bass alone easily vibrates the whole apartment. When I'm playing UT2K4 and blasting 2pac I'm sure he get's annoyed. But, I'm also considerate because I don't blast my system at 2am. I work midnights (12-8am) so at that time I'm hardly ever home. In addition, I attend college so I'm hardly ever home at night. If I'm gaming or listening to music at night the headphones come on.

He must think I'm a geek/gansta wannabe because thats all he hears coming from my apartment.

If it were my roommate doing running the Vacuum and I were already in bed trying to sleep I'd be hella pissed, but if it were my neighbor then I could care less considering I can't really hear what they do.

Why don't you do the neighborly thing and ask your neighbor?

Otherwise, don't turn it on after between 10 PM and 8 AM. (10 PM is a pretty common time for "quiet hours" to go into effect in most apartment buildings.)

EDIT: And for a loud thing like a vacuum, 9 PM is even more considerate.

If he didn't have his TV on, 10:45 is too late. But if he was awake and doing stuff and no one else that he lives with, if there's anyone, wasn't sleeping, then I'd say you were okay (provided you wouldn't be disturbing any other neighbors). And this is coming from someone who likes to have peace and quiet. If he was making noise, then I don't see a problem with you making noise as well.

I'm surprised he has not yet filed a complaint with an apt manager.

hehe... my neighbor was cleaning it out all day. It's nice but it's hooked up kinda getto like. The backyard is awefully tiny and it's in the corner of his yard in the open.

in my building, quiet hours are 10pm to 8am. running it after 10 is somewhat rude to your neighbors. moreso for me because i live inbetween a medical student/resident and a dental student.
