I was considering getting a 10,000 rpm hard drive to speed things up. But then I noticed how much they cost and how little capacity they have. Why do they cost so much? And why do they hold so little? Is it worth the preformance for the price, and how long before these things are considered standard?

I own them and htey are not worth the price/performance...

Pick up a used raptor to try to save some cash...I bought mine 1 year ago and today it is nearly the same or hgher price...back then it was reall competing against the ATA133 drives as these faster large SATA drives were really not out yet....

Who really knows why it hasn't really been adopted by anybody other then WD so far...Maybe that is a hint to its future....

You own the slow 1st gen raptor Duvie, and on Anandtech's benchmarks they showed that drive isn't faster than 7200rpm drives. However, the 2nd gen Raptor is much faster.

How can you tell the difference between 1st and 2nd gen 10k drives?

Actaully this drive is faster then my 7200 SATA Seagate and killed my 7200rpm ATA drives I had.....Its write times according to ATTO (a real benchmark are much better then the seagate 7200rpm) are much better....

I know it is not the best...tell me you think the 170+ dollars for a 74gb drive of the second raptor is worth it...The question is price performance and the 2nd generation does not have it...

According to the benchmarks, the 2nd gen is a lot faster in many instances than the 1st gen, and it has double the capacity, so it's obviously worth more than the 1st gen..

1st gen is only 36GB, 2nd gen is 74GB. I have the 2nd gen one.

Uhm, 36 gig raptors rock. They are faster period. The 74 gigs are faster. The difference bewteen first and second gen is mainly heat and noise.
