$10,000 budget for dedicated theatre build....

If you dont mind used, I would check Craigslist out for speakers. I realized this after purchasing my paradigms and 6 month to 1 year speakers can be had for 50% off or more.

I finished my basement about 2 years ago and it's around 23'x15' and I spent around $10k to add the theater components.

I went with ascend acoustic speakers. They have a sale right now where you can get 5 speakers for $998 (same ones I have and I'm very happy with them). I paired the speakers with an SVS PB-10 subwoofer. You might think it's small, but the 10" woofer is pretty big and easily fills the room.

I went with a cheap optoma HD70 projector. If I was doing it again, I'd go with a 1080p projector, but a the same time, I'm 12' from a 100" screen and it looks great.

I had an old yamaha receiver which I'm still using, so I can't help much there.

You didn't mention a dvd player, so you might want to leave some money for that. I bought an HD-DVD player, so I'm looking for the price of blu-ray players to come down now.

I built my own screen with black out cloth from Jo-Ann fabrics and I'm really happy with it.

The most important part of the theater is the seating. Do not go cheap there. I got 6 berkline 45004 leather recliners and I absolutely love them.

I did a Jo-Ann fabrics screen too 😉

Masking system uses some black velvet that really helps make the image pop. I think I'd have a hard time enjoying a system as much without a masking system.

I'm looking at something like this for my seating:

http://www.theaterseatstore.co...ore?sc=14&category=203

Probably one row of three for now and then a riser with an extra couch we have. Then probably another row of three up on the riser when the "fun stuff" penny jar fills back up again.

I'm considering some masking solutions, but I don't need any fancy automated/powered systems. A simple drape on the sides and a similar method for the top and bottom should be fine. My wife is actually kind of excited to do some curtains and things for the room 🙂

For powered thats a great price

I'm anti-powered for some reason personally though, but at that price I'm tempted to buy those for my house right now. 😛

Nice masking system Jello! I never saw that thread. PS you have my dream bachelor pad I think (that's not a super rich guys pad lol) 😛

I did a black velvet border around the edge which works great for 1.85 stuff, but I'm definitely looking into something similar to what you did with the magnets to improve the 2.35 stuff. Not sure I'll even bother with the 4:3 mask since none of that stuff is in HD anyways.

The Berlkine Encore's for $600 looks like a pretty good deal, especially with free shipping. You might want to read some reviews of the berkline power recline seats on avsforum before you purchase. Some people complain that it takes too long to go from fully reclined to upright. Others complain that without the power seats, you can't recline part way (either all the way up or all the way reclined). My seats are not powered, and I have no problem stopping half way. Although if you have kids, I can imagine it might be difficult for them to recline half way.

Edit: I think you said your room was 15' wide, if that's the case, you might want to look at the space saver berkline 45004. These are the ones I got.

My theater is 14' wide and this gives about 30' on each side of the row of 3 chairs.

Classic movies/filmed TV shows are coming out on Blu.

Oh, and if you still end up looking at rockets, there's a deal on currently with 850/200/450 for $1999 + shipping http://www.av123.com//index.ph...m_virtuemart&Itemid=37
The same package was $1699 a week ago, which was an excellent price.

Or even the 450/200/450 combo

+ 850s on their own

Oh, and there's some b-stock there too

Small update.

Got our old house sold last week. But in the time I made this thread we switched to a different builder. Found a guy that is nationally recognized for his energy saving build construction. He has homes that are over 4200 sq/ft that are averaging $140-$150 a month gas & electric bills in the Midwest. That's pretty freaking good. My previous home was almost $60 a month more than that and we had almost 1500 less sq/ft.

He's also got a unique floor plan that we really liked. He does what he calls a "mid-level" den. It's basically a two story house with a main floor master/laundry/kitchen/living room and a full second story. But sort of offset from the main floor is another column on the house that has two more rooms. One sort of sits halfway below the main floor and the other sits halfway above. From the main floor you can walk down a couple steps to den, or up a couple to another den. And then you can turn a corner and walk a few more down to the basement or if you are going up a few more to get to the upstairs.

It's a pretty cool setup. Right now the dens are spec'd out to be 15' deep by 13' wide with a 9' ceiling. I'm going to be using the "bottom" den for the HT room. I'd like a few more feet deep but I think I can work that. The screen wall is just going to have to be pretty shallow.

Should be getting blueprints in a week or two once the paperwork goes through the bank.

Good news.

FYI my new place has a room that's quite similar in size to yours.
16x13x9

It's a tight fit for two rows of seating, but it appears to be working alright so far.

Naturally you could do a lot more with the ability to construct things vs. my rented situation.

You can also get a LOT more for your projector dollar now than when you started the thread 🙂

I think I've got the allowances in the quote to bump out another 2 feet in depth, which would be really helpful. It's just that after so many tweaks and upgrades they tend to add up to a really scary number.

I paid another $3,000 to take a 3rd stall garage from 26' feet of depth all the way back to be squared up to the back of the house at 40 feet of depth. Garages are cheap.

It'd cost me over $2,000 to add just 2 feet to the dens. Living space isn't cheap, and I have to pay double because it affects two floors of living space that has to be finished.

Garage theater time? 😉

On the bright side, since you posted the thread a bunch of new, better projectors have come out in the same price point. At that throw distance you can comfortably do a 8' wide screen, at least.
