I jumped from software QA, to a desktop computer tech, to a Windows/UNIX server admin, to a VMWare server administration (loved it!), to Rational server administration (hated it!), and back to a Windows/UNIX administration as a consultant.

No real formal training other than my CIS degree in college... I just did what my employers asked of me, and learned it along the way.

Until you gain some certs and experience, I don't think you're going anywhere. Best option is to ask to get involved and learn some network stuff at your current place.
