My daughter lost her best friend one year ago today. Killed in an auto accident. Her family has put up a memorial web site for her:

Tricia Joyce Millican

She had just turned 14 the day before. Snuck out of her house that night to party with some friends and by 2AM was killed in a auto rollover. She was a passenger and wasn't wearing her seatbelt. She was a good girl but made a tragic mistake. My daughter is pictured bottom left in a group photo they took together about 6 months before her death. Her name is Kara ( Blond standing on left. )

RIP : Trisha

My daughter was sad today as you might expect.

Both. 🙁

And speeding down a hill at about 80mph. The corner was a marked 20mph turn. A 16 year old girl was driving. She is paralyzed from the shoulders down. Two other 16 yr old boys where in the back seat and were the only ones wearing their seatbelts. They had no injuries.

Which again leads me to wonder why the hell anyone gets in a car and doesn't put on a seatbelt.

Yup. But her death has taught my daughter and her friends that simple but valuable lesson. My daughter has been a belt user ever since.

My brother never uses his. He uses the same tired excuse as everyone else - "I knew a guy that was hurt because he WAS wearing a seatbelt. I'll never use one!" Pathetic.

Send him these pictures. The car flipped & skidded on the drivers side. I was not even scratched, thanks to the seatbelt (airbags may have helped too).

The thing was that both girls were thrown from the car as it rolled. Trisha had the car rollover her. She died within a couple minutes from the fatal injuries. The other girl was lucky not to have the car roll on her but she is badly injured for life.

I am in utter shock 2 16-yr old boys in the BACK seat WOULD put on seatbelts. I never do for the back seats, but always in the front. Not saying what's right or wrong, just uncommon.

If I'm in a car, regardless of where, I feel naked if I'm NOT wearing one. Guess thats just the way I was raised.

sorry to hear that. I was involved in a very bad accident last year. My ex-girlfriend and I were on the motorcycle and we skidded over oil spilt on the road at 70mph. Luckily we were wearing helmets, otherwise we would have been dead. She wasn't injured except that she had burn marks and bruises over her right leg. I was unconscious for 10 minutes and I catapulted like 20 meters from where the actual accident took place. I am not at all emotional, but hell somebody dying in a crash reminds me of my horrid past, and makes me feel sad for the person/s involved in the accident.🙁

I see it a lot where I live with the people that are within 1-6 years younger than me. It's a sad thing to see. You would think that one incident would help them realize that they are not exempt from harm's way. My condolences go out to them.

I was called to an auto accident just last week involving two passengers not wearing their seat belts. That was one of the more horrific scenes I've ever seen.

I've experienced losing a good friend to an auto accident, and even after 4 years it's still pains me to remember it. 🙁

seat belts saves lives.. regardless.. of what ppl say. I have a rule in my car, no belt, no going anywhere.

however i have seen one situation where the guy didnt survive. It was a head on accident between a speeding camaro and a older early 90's honda (pre airbag)again we had a young driver who stole his dad's camero Z28 and took it up the mountains (Angeles Crest National Highway).

The driver of the other car didnt move, we got there within like a minute or two of the actual accident, he died before even i could get hold of 911. He died in his seat. The driver of the other car not only totalled dad's car, but apparently broke his leg. I dont know if he had to have it amputated or anything.

Kids should be given more training before being let out by themselves. I know my kids will have to pass the rules i set for them before being let out on the road by themselves.
