Um... I can probably get 2 used 256MB DDR used Crucial sticks for $115. Or a new 512MB stick for $150 something.
My mobo only has three DIMM slots, and one is already occupied with a 256MB stick. So, I think 512MB is a wiser choice to make which will left me with one more slot for future upgrade. But from the economical stand point, 2 x 256MB is probably a better one to go with; besides, I would imagine that 768MB is enough for WinXP and many other applications/games/etc., so no upgrade will be needed most likely.
But more opinions are still welcome, that's the whole point of this post.

i would say go for the 2x 256 chips. 768 megs of memory seems to be enough, as you point out, and later on you may wish to put 256 of that memory in one computer, and the other 256 in a different computer. It also sounds to be more economical, so i would go the 2 stick route

Best o luck
