I wish I knew more about Linux. After that, networking (I'm basically clueless) and database (although I have a fairly good knowledge of that)

apparently all the hardcore computer people like linux/unix; i know a moderate amount of each of the other skills and would call myself semi-hardcore, but i still haven't had teh guts to venture towards the -x's

I wish I knew Perl or PHP or CGI. I know html like the back of my hand, but I'd like to know more than just basic commands with PHP and Perl.

Wow, I noticed that almost no one chose Windows Server 2003! I'm not really all that interested in learning it, either, because I'm planning on migrating all of my Windows NT and 2000 Servers boxes to Linux.

I wish that I had some l33t programming skillz, though. That way, I could write programs to automate some of the more boring parts of my job, like account creation and reseting expired passwords.

I can do most of it ok some better than others (no mainframe experience, I can fudge around with Unix/Linux, I compiled my own kernel once, I can tinker with web stuff, I can mess with Networking, I can program relatively well and hardware installation is almost a no-brainer), but the one thing I'm lacking and wish I understood better is databases.

I've picked up quite a bit of VB/C/C++ along the way and gotten pretty good at it all but as a resault web based stuff has fell by the wayside. I really wish I had some more advanced HTML/PHP/ASP/Perl/etc. experience.

Web design.

I've got many people looking to pay me to do their website and I'm kinda looking for something to do after I retire.

those saying web design?!?! what kind of design do you mean? A 6 year old now is building pages....

I am a nearly dual degree (one Comp Sci BA and one 6 credit light Bio/Chem/Zoo BA degree) and I cannot find a decent IT job locally due to cert carrying high school drop outs flooding the market and willing to work for $6 per hour since mommy and daddy still support them :).

I have a $240 school loan payment each month, rent, food, utilities, etc and just can't compete in wage with someone living at home.

I have Oracle DB training, Office, C, ASP, assembly, PASCAL, BASIC, some PERL, Access, SQLserver, Jscript, some Networking, all Windows OS's and some UNIX/VAX....etc. I have been online since 1983....

At my last job I got $17 per hour for their $75 billable hour...they wanted me to double and triple bill my time so I left. At the same time they picked up two other employees at $6 per hour with MS certs that got the whole business MS advertizing.....these guys were both still living at home and one even had a family.

Pretty screwed up....I live in West Palm Beach, Florida, a pretty BIG city....however Miami or Orlando is where I'd need to be to probably make it. My wife who is a 20 year IBM programmer from Japan with a four year degree in Business and Computer Information Systems cannot find a job either at any realistic wage.

well I think I don't agree with your statements
you need to move my friend
I think there is jobs out there for good IT professionals
all my friends that are in IT have really good jobs (usually making more than 80 K a year)
of course they live in NYc, Atlanta, Miami, LA etc....
West Palm is close enough to get a job in Miami
or even better in fort lauderdale (lots of IT jobs there)
once again you should really think of relocating my friend

By saying I need to move you are agreeing with my statements. Also I have checked in Ft. Lauderdale, I used to live there and moved to West Palm Beach for a reason, and they want mostly certs....they don't seem to care about degree and/or experience. I didn't check Miami as that is at least a two hour commute x 2 daily....Orlando is about 2.5 hours then the local traffic. At that point if necessary I'd go back into Banking that I also have over a decade experience in....but the thought of a suit and tie everyday and a very structured workplace is not for me.

My brother also has a great job (six figures) no college degree in the IT field in Louisiana of all places...doesn't mean everyone can duplicate that.

I am doing my own thing now, working from home doing sales and I plan to expand into importing/exporting/etc...I am done working for others.

I wish you the best
I will stay in my well paid IT job for now until I find the courage to work for myself
