Unfortunately, they do not tell you the platter count. Anyone know?

I'm guessing it depends on revision. Early EAVS drives had 4 platters. It's possible new ones have 3 or even 2 (WD is silently switching to 500GB platters now), but without revision or without physically looking at the drive it's impossible to tell.

hmm 8 mb buffers... this is less than the buffers on the Hitachi deskstars that everyone complains about. How much a performance hit would this take vs my WD10EADS with 32 mb buffer

I went ahead and ordered 4. 🙂

How can I tell, via label or just looking at drive, if I have 4, 3, or even 2 platters?

Also, could something like HD Tach difference based on performance differences of the curves?

these are bulk storage drives, not performance drives...

Obviously, but I just wasn't sure how the 8 meg cache would effect transfer speed. Nothing blazing is needed but if its slow like a crappy usb jump drive then I would rather pay a few bucks more.

I hope these have warranty. I've read twice so far about instances of the EAVS OEM drives not having any warranty from WD. If they don't have warranty, I'm sending mine back, I think.

Edit: Is that why they tried to sell me additional warranty terms at checkout? I wonder...

That also showed up for Hitachi 2 TB retail hard drive.

I didn't see drive listed at WDC's warranty page, but I would guess it has a valid 3 year warranty, unless it with an OEM pull like you might buy off of eBay.

Guess we'll find out when they arrive and do warranty check at WDC website.

8mb cache shouldn't hurt sequential reads... multitasking suffers with smaller cache with less room for read ahead on multiple threads...

what's interesting is the wdc support guys saying that you shouldn't use these in raid... not that it's an untrue statement, but they have to expect that people will do that...

For a short period of time I had an EAVS from Dell. I looked up the Serial on the WD site and it came up as three years.

With EACS model the 3 platter version had different top, it had flat top whereas 4 platter version had aluminum foil sticker right in the center covering drive shaft. I would assume EAVS would be similar since it's essentially the same drive except for the cache size.

Yeh....I just got back from fry's and if they have them they are 59.99 I passed on one of them as they said 1yr warranty(OEM)

They do have the Hitachi 1tb 32mb 7200rpm retail box'd for 69.99 today only instore ad. Hope it's good enough.

If you bought one of the WD10EAVS, did you check the WDC website to see what warranty on that specific drive is?

Warranty info from the WD10EAVS spec sheet says this model carries a three year limited warranty. Footnote 4 says:

4 The term of the limited warranty may vary by region. Visit support.wdc.com/warranty for details.

At the given address, clicking End User Customers and Warranty Services takes you to a link that asks for the serial number of your drive to confirm the warranty info.

I went to get the WD drive but they had the 1TB Seagate Barracuda for $69 when I was there and it had a 32mb cache and was a retail box, so I got it instead. Also picked up the X3 710 processor for $49. They have some great deals right now.
