1 TB external USB Drive for $328

anyone know what brand drives are inside? i'd be tempted if it were two seagate drives. 🙂

Most external drives have a 1 year warranty. Maxtor, Seagate, Western Digital, Lacie and Buffalo to name a few. The only external drive I've seen with more than 1 year is the WD My Book Pro Edition.

To be a little more clear the drive is 408 + 11-12 ground shipping, plus tax in some states (they don't really give a list) and 2- 40.00 MIR. One of the rebates is handled in-house, the second rebate is handled by the rebate house in Niagara Falls. I think it's rebatestatus.com if I am not mistaken. Anybody have experience with Fantom in-house rebates?

Cool Drive - If It Can Be Gotten For That Price...

I Don't Like Rebates In General... This Deal Requires 2...

Don't forget, this is quite obviously one of those enclosures that has 2 hard drives in Raid 0. Between the increased heat and number of drives, it easily increases risk of failure.

From the long list of bad reviews, it doesn't seem like the best reseller to go through either. Wouldn't be surprised if some of the good reviews are faked too.

If you want a good warranty on an external drive, buy the enclosure and hard drive separately.

If you really feel the need to get it, spend the extra $50 at Newegg. At least if it has problems you can return it, and Newegg sells Extended warranties now too.

I use fantom drives.

Bought a drive, failed in a couple weeks use.

The drive basically stopped reading, it freezes everytime you try to access... I put in a RMA form, and its been couple days and no response.. =/

I can see how manufacturers would give shorter warranty on portable HDD compared to internal HDD. External HDD will experience a lot more rough handling. Why not just buy an internal drive and buy external enclosure? Is it more expensive that way?

I got a Fantom Titanium II 250 GB external hard drive and my computer identified the hard drive as an MDT MD-25 when I plugged it in.

On a deals forum, someone said that MDT are recertfified hard drives, although others said the practice of not saying they contain refurbished hard drives is illegal.

The link I found was for Magnetic Data, and digging around their website it does say that they refurbish OEM hard drives.

Can't speak about any other Fantom hard drives, though.

Don't part with your cash before checking sites like http://www.resellerratings.com/store/Onsale

Spotty retailer, beware.

I have no experience with their rebates, so be careful there. As far as being a retailer goes, they use the same "regional warehouse" in my area as Buy.com and Provantage.com.
