If you don't plan on overclocking the CPU, use the stock HSF and do not remove the thermal pad. I'm pretty sure AMD knows what they are doing when they supply the HSF with the CPU.

I've already tried the stock cooler with pad and a CoolerMaster KK8 w/Ceramique' and both are very quite but the stock is 2c cooler and copper bottomed while the CM is Alu. Amazingly, it seems the thermal pad is similar to the CoolerMaster premium I've used that's based on Shin-Etsu, I was able to use it for a day, take it off to use the CoolerMaster, and put it back on with the same pad because it has a good layer of T.I.M. *maybe too thick to begin with* In fact I'd say it's better now that some came off on the CPU. Anywho, temps are in the low 60's under load so I'll be in the market for that Alpha or maybe live with this till Thermalright gets A64 coolers out.

Low 60's on an Athlon64 ??? Something is wrong here. What is the case temp ? I can't get mine over 44c no matter how much load for how long and no matter how hot the room is !!

That was@2.3ghz 1.6v and the on-die temp reading 😉 The external CPU temp reading is 43-44c depending on load, but the on-die temp is 61-63c when running SETI for awhile. I suppose it's possible the SOYO errs high but given the speed, voltage, and load it is probably damned close to actual. The sink is on very good and makes excellent contact based on how it created a seal that pulled the CPU out with the Ceramique' and squished the thermal pad with the stock so that only a thin film remained between it and the IHS so it certainly isn't a contact issue. The fan speed hover around 3300rpm with the stock, that sound about right? At default settings the CPU peaks@52-54c on-die under load 38-40 external.
