Agreed. I'm tired of high ticket prices, outrageous drink prices and pain in the ass people in the theaters. If they'd make an attempt to lower the ticket prices, normalize the snack prices and keep 10 year old annoying giggling girls out, I'd definately go more. I enjoy watching movies in the theater, but its just too much of a PITA to do it unless its a movie I REALLY want to see. Hell, even then I wait probably 2 months or so to catch it towards the end of its showings instead of at the beginning.

You know, theaters are a cut throat business with VERY thin profit margins. The only way they could cut prices is to cut services and infrastructure.

As for nasty people, I agree. That's why I bought a HT system and wait for the DVD.

Even WITH a 50" HDTV, cinema movies still look and sound way better.

A 106 inch screen and I have a much better sound system than 95% of movie theaters, plus no cell phone ringers and talking people, pause button for bathroom breaks, cheap snacks.... and there are others.

I've never downloaded a movie I wasn't willing to see in the theater and the movies that are DVD rips are movies I'd never bother to buy or rent so there is no loss of money from me, considering I usually see one movie per week in the theater.

I think if Hollywood didn't recycle movies and actually came up with original scripts people would go to the movies.

People are tired of seeing their favorite Hollywood classics butchered, or stupid sequels made.

It's getting to the point where I only go to the movies around 3 times a year.

I'm not saying their aking money hand over fist, I'm simply saying why I dont go. I really dont care if there profit margins are paper thin or Titanic wide, fact is in my eyes its too expensive. But then again, when I go its at a minimum with my wife, sometimes with a kid as well. So, take that 8 dollar ticket, multiply it by 2, maybe 3. Then top it off with drinks and popcorn, and suddenly I'm out 20 to 30 bucks to go see a movie filled with inconsiderate giggling girls and boys that wanna run dialogue along with the movie. And thats what I get for 30 bucks? A noisy movie environment, a soda and a popcorn........ Well, thats a winning situation now isnt it ;)

What a load of crap, 17% of the 25% that do download movies have diminished their spending on movies; we can therefore conclude that 83% of those who download movies either kept their spending constant or increased it. I'm sure the 20.75% of people that increased spending or kept it constant more than made up for the lost revenue of the other 4.25%. If the MPAA had any sense at all, they'd start up an iTunes-like service ASAP in addition to pushing for high quality video on demand, to make movies more available.

I went to the movies last night and had to watch 5 tv-like commercials! On top of that all those previews they show. I dont want to pay $8 to watch 20 min of previews and commercials.

I read a news story in which Michael Moore stated that he didn't care if people downloaded Fahrenheit 9/11. So I downloaded it and watched it.

If you can take that many to the movie for $20-$30, wow. Last time I went to the movies, a ticket with student discount, medium coke, and a medium popcorn cost $20 just for myself, not something I am apt to do very often. This was at a United Artist theater.
Now the little theater we have in the town I live in is ran by some college students, and tickets are only $3, which I am more then willing to pay to see a movie, there snack prices aren't too bad either, but I usually don't get any.

I still enjoy going to theaters for the experience. I have a nice HT setup in my apartment, but the screen and sound still can't beat a nice theater (although some HTs trounce the theaters).

I don't download movies because I don't see the point. The video and sound quality are sh!t, and I can rent the DVD for $4. If I really like the movie, I'll buy it for $15 on release day. $15 to own a movie legitimately (with premium picture and sound) is not a lot of money, folks.

I hate that above all else at the theater. Those damn TV commercials piss me off to no end. I already had to pay to get into the movie, so why am I being forced to watch TV (or TV-like) commercials that I could just see sitting at home? And some of them are just horrible. I can't stand that stupid Fanta commercial. I'll never buy their drink simply because I hate the commercial so much and the fact that they have placed it at the start of every movie I've seen the past couple of months.

You know, I have had broadband since summer 1999 and I have never actually downloaded a new release movie, and to be honest, the only sales they've lost from me are rentals. If there is a new movie out that I want to see, I'm not going to watch some crap copy I got off of kazaa, I'm going to the theater. If I like the movie enough to want a copy of it? Wait until the DVD = $9.99 - $14.99 and get it. The movies I did get, I got off the campus network and I wouldn't have paid to rent them (although now that I have netflix I'd probably have seen 'em).

Bah! The MPAA hasn't lost a penny from me due to piracy. The RIAA on the other hand ;)...

That's the worst part of going to the movies. It should be legal to throw a brick at people who make stupid comments throughout a movie. If that were the case, I'd go, even if they charged outrageous prices for the bricks (for $0.75 more you can upgrade to a cinder block).

Agreed. Out here at the AMC 10, (complete with small screen and non stadium seating. The only theatre in town besides the dollar theatre), an adult ticket is $8.50. A large, two drink, one popcorn combo is $12. For my wife and myself it can run up over $30 pretty easily with only popped corn and syrup water.

They have 7 GB uncompressed DVD rips online? I assumed most were re-encoded using divx, xvid or some other MPEG-4 derivative to conserve space.
