Hi, I'm helping someone choose components for a new PC, they mostly do multi-threaded programming and testing so they're really looking at one of these new Core i7 CPUs.

He likes his current 2 19" monitor set-up and is thinking about placing a 24" in the middle. As he doesn't need a powerful graphics set-up 1 mid-range graphics card will do if he can run 3 monitors off one. I'm sure I've seen shots of ATi cards providing 3 monitors or maybe I'm thinking of something else like Hybrid CrossFire providing it. Anyone know if it's possible?

If he doesn't game or do any 3D stuff, just get two cheap video cards. Crossfire and SLI and stuff doesn't matter.

He does WoW, that's it. But I think building a quiet case was a priority, so the less fans the better.

I would not qualify a HD 3870x2 as quiet, although it will certainly handle WoW.

if he wasnt getting a core i7 (and really for programming i dont think it matters much)

you could jsut get an nvidia 9300 board, and another nvidia card with dual dvi.
