Source; I have 1gbps internet.

In all seriousness though, it's not about a SINGLE client maxing out a 1gbps link, it's about 10-20 or even 50 devices being connected and not really having to worry about congestion.

When you have 5 people all downloading, streaming, gaming at once, it's nice to not even notice that someone else is doing stuff at the same time you are.

With 150mbps, I could tell if I was downloading while someone else was downloading. With 1gbps, most servers top out at 300-500mbps anyway, so that still leaves half your bandwidth for everyone else on your network to download, stream, etc.

tldr; great for multiple users at once and heavy downloading.

What about cloud storage ?
Depends on the services you use, but i've noticed google drive and dropbox both upload and download very quickly, but I don't store any large files or folders on these services so it's hard to really say what speeds i'm getting.

Just did a quick test with google drive as it's the only one that I had space for a large file.

4.3GB MKV uploaded at 15-25MB/s
then i took that same MKV and downloaded it from google at 50-60MB/s

So 200mbps upload and about 480mbps download, which matches my google speedtest results pretty evenly.

AT&T keeps sending me letters telling me I can get their fiber service $70/month though... on top of TV charges too. Ouch.

Part of the reason I bought the house I'm in now is that I was promised gigabit internet. Turns out despite the fact that the people across the street can get it, and the ISP confirmed before I moved here that I can get it, that I can't get it. So I'm stuck on crappy 20mb DSL.

So why can the people across the street get it then ?

That sucks, well at least it isn't 3.5mb DSL. And yea why cant you get it is it underground?

Yup. And the ISP can't be bothered to hook this development up even though it has been here for 3+ years. They are apparently "working on it". Which means they already knew the house couldn't get their service when they told me it could. Being in the IT business I should have known never to trust an ISP.

My LTE is garbage here in the US. At least at my house. Wifi is required and thankfully my phone does wifi calling just fine. Everything else is wired.

I never even knew that LTE modems existed until I moved here. It's painful.
Yeah, they're becoming more popular because the cost of deploying fiber to a cell tower is a lot cheaper than building fiber nodes to do FTTH or copper last mile. Or deploying a DOCSIS type system.
