1. Don't bring your pistol when you come to visit Canada.

He's an idiot, he deserves at least to be arrested and fined.. maybe banned from coming back until he gets a pardon. Would you try to cross the border to America with guns in your possession? and a pistol to boot.

I support Americans right to own legal firearms. However, it's fairly common knowledge that Canada is not a gun friendly country. Not only does it fail to respect our laws, but it just adds ammunition to the stereotype of Americans being unworldly.

These people who feel the need to carry their gun absolutely everywhere also reflects the persistent paranoia in American culture. There's this belief that baddies are absolutely everywhere. Both the US and Canada are two of the safest countries in the world statistically.

He's an idiot who thought he could get away with it. I hate to inform all the Canadians on this board and all other Canadians who think all Americans are this way, but I feel no need to carry a gun with me wherever I go. Not all Americans are as paranoid as this guy or any of the people you see posting on this forum. But then again, I believe all of you guys from up in the Great White North like to screw bears and the occasional moose. Am I correct in assuming this of all Canadians?

It does seem a bit harsh how it's being handled, but guns ARE taken quite seriously here so guess they just want to make sure they lay down the law. Stupid of him for trying to bring it over AND lying about it.

Gotta protect yourself from those evil people asking dangerous questions such as if you've been to the stampede. :p

it's not a stereotype that americans are unworldly - it's the fucking truth. our schools, and television, have taught our people to be as ignorant of the rest of the world as possible. they have succeeded.

Indeed. I'm not paranoid at all and I carry a gun where my permit's recognized. However, when I choose to talk about it I'm often lectured on my mental state by people who have known me for less than 2 hours, and whom I was having a perfectly comfortable conversation with before I mentioned I carried. It's become quite a good litmus test for weeding out judgmental assholes. From that moment on I guarantee said assholes thought about my gun more than I did for the rest of the day.

The gun owner in the OP is an idiot, but from all indications a harmless one. The only thing I see is a Canadian prosecutor trying to make an example out of him, which, frankly, he kinda deserves. As far as I'm concerned this post might as well be about a drunk driver who was just barely over the limit and didn't hurt anyone, but the officer smelled alcohol on his breath.

The only reason the rest of the world knows anything about each other is necessity. If everyone had the resources/position of America, they'd be just as unworldly as we are.

The article says the gun charge was dropped since he did not intend to bring the gun.

So the Canadians have been very fair about that.

Lying to the officer is one charge, okay.

Smuggling, I don't get. They dropped the gun charge. So what was he smuggling? Must be more to the story.

LOL at this being an American specific stereotype.

It's true though. Half of you people think Toronto is our capitol and they other half never heard of Toronto.

I was watch the reality show Ultimate Fighter, and one team was from England the other Team from USA. One of the guys on the USA squad thought the other team was from New England, accents and all, lol. The English guys were saying, "No, we're from the UK, never even heard of New England".

I would say that is a small sample size to draw your conclusions on.

Which is exactly why the rest of the world is as ignorant as we are...they see a "reality" TV show and think that is what everyone here is like...

It is human nature to apply the little you know about something/someone to the whole.

If I met one person from Indonesia in my life, and he was an asshole, I'd say, "Man, Indonesians are assholish"
