Why are all their rollercoasters so damn old? I'm all for nostalgia, but haven't there been some safety advances in the last 20-30 years that would have helped avoid something like this?

Well, with this accident they only have one working roller coaster, The Matterhorn. That one had to be rebuilt recently because the entire mountain (made of wood) had started rotting away.
They recently had to do an unexpected closure of Space Mountain because the tracks were falling apart. It will be closed for the next year or two.
Now Thunder Mountain looks to be in for a long overhaul/safety check.

Maintenance in the park really took a backseat to profits the past 9 years or so. Fortunately the guy that used to run the place (Paul Pressler) left to go run the Gap, but his legacy remains. Tomorrowland is a ghost town with loads of closed and otherwise failed rides. California Adventure (Pressler's baby) is a complete flop. Things are not so rosy in the Magic Kingdom.

Sad but accidents do happen 🙁

How many people have died at Disneyland in total?

Ummm there was like what, 10 rollercoaster deaths in the last 10 years? Compare that to automobile deaths.

Everytime there is an amusement park death, the media goes all over it.

i wonder what accident rates are at other parks?

Probably no where near as much if we are talking visitors per year to deaths.

Weird...everytime I ride a ride someone dies on it a couple months later. I was at DL over Christmas. When I went to Six Flags junior year there was a water ride I rode about 8 times over and over again - a couple months later someone died on it.

PM me the next time you go to DL or Six Flags or Knotts. I'll make sure I won't be there for several months 😉

It makes me wonder tho. Imagine you're on Goliath or X or Deja Vu, and your ride derails from like what 10-18 story high, and fly straight to the ground. Scary.

That was by brother's favorite ride @ disney. The line was usually short, and we would ride it 10+ times in an hour.

😀

Same here. We rode it 6 times in a row when we went, was the most fun ride we went on.

uh oh. i didnt think anyone was allowed to die on disney property.

The death was the 10th at the park since it opened in 1955, said police Sgt. Rick Martinez. Not all the deaths have been ride-related. 🙁
