Yup.

I never heard of a cat eating dog food. I may have to check into this. Any suggestions?

my old cat would eat the dog's food sometimes. not much of it. the dog really liked to eat the cat's food. so the cat ate on top of the counter in the laundry room, where the dog couldn't get to the food. cat also got half a can in addition to dry food each day.

I've fed my cats DeliCat for the past 6 years... seems fine.

They are 10 now, I read that they often do not like change? So if MM is working I don't know if I'd risk switching over...

Normally we feed our 14(?) year old cat Meow Mix because according to her, its the cats meow (well she eats it anyway). But I was thinking, is it worth feeding cats stuff like 9lives? Its a pricer choice, but I dunno.

We do give her treats sometimes, but 9lives brand cat food might not be what she prefers. She might treat it like something the cat dragged in. :frown:

I fed my cat meow mix for a while and she was ballooning. Ate too much to get the nutrition she needed because of fillers. Switched to IAMS, much better.

Commercial retail pet food = suck. It's all mostly filler along with some vitamin supplements to make it appear healthy.

Errr... I was joking. Kinda. I dunno how cats would like dog food, but *I* don't like cat food and like dog food better. Cat food tastes like bitter liver and gives me the runs. Dog food tastes like liver pate and is ok for my stomach. Cheap!

Awesome.

😕 So now we know FBB eats dog/cat food.

Amazing.

 Nice to see you back FBB.

I once heard animals don't like a change in diet. So unless your cat is eating only to survive, chances are she doesnt want a change in food.

at 14 it's a bit late.

In general canned foods are the best and even the cheaper brands usually very good.

Dry foods are usually terrible. Wellness and a few others make decent ones.

Kirkland Feline Maintenace is an EXCELLENT food for like $15 for 25 lbs. I feed our little feral colony this food. First ingredient is CHICKEN, second is CHICKEN MEAL. Most start with corn or some other bullshit.

I never feed my animals canned food. I don't like the way it looks, and I don't trust it. The stuff makes me gag when I open the can. I'd rather clean 10 litter boxes, than serve 1 can of cat food :^D

I always buy Purina brand foods. I like their breakfast cereals, and if it's good enough for me, it's good enough for kitty.

We changed our cat's food a few weeks ago because we couldn't remember what we had before.
He wouldn't eat for 3 days... so we bailed on the "He'll eat when he's hungry" idea and found his old stuff.

I read somewhere online that cats may not know their new cat food is even food.
If it smells or looks differently, they may starve themselves before they eat it.

I have been through a lot of brands. I got meow mix and while they eat it, it isn't their favorite. They actually prefer the cheaper cat food that is one step above generic. I looked at the contents and this is what it says:

The brand name is alley cat.

ground yellow corn, corn gluten meal, soybean meal, chicken meal, animal fat, ocean fish meal, tuna meal, calcium, salt vitamins, E, A, D,B2, B1, B6,D3, folic acid, b12, L-Lysine,Iron,zinc oxide, Magnesium, Copper, Taurine, Red 40, Rosemary extract

If it follows ingredient labeling rules for consumers, the first ingredient is the most used following to the last.
So its mostly corn meal.
Still seems healthy enough for even people 🙂

Honestly, the quality of both Meow Mix and 9Lives is pretty poor, even compared to the mid-tier stuff you find at PetSmart. Lots of by-product and filler versus nutrients they actually digest and use. If you're going to make the effort to change up her diet, you might as well go for something better.

I feed my cats Iams since it has the highest listing of actual meat and not meal and fillers, for a common brand at least.

I feed my cats both dry and canned. Dry food is still good for their teeth.

Except cats aren't equipped to get nutrition out of corn.

A cat food should be primarily meat or meat meal with the former greatly preferred.

You do realize the experiments Iams performs on cats and dogs right? I wouldn't buy one of their products no matter how good for that reason alone.

Kirkland's cat food is higher quality actually and much cheaper.

As in Costco Kirkland?

My vet recommended Iam's FWIW.

Least amount of filler for major brand.

most veternarians have no training in nutrition other than the vendor telling them what to sell.

I recommend anyone compare the Kirkland (costco) cat food to others if they are shopping price.

I feed my personal cats Wellness dry and pouches. The outdoor ferals get Kirkland and Natural Balance (an excellent cheaper canned food).

To the other dude calling me a PETA nut. I am a zoologist by degree. Scientists in general are not in agreement with their practices...it's much more than just a PETA cruisade.

Cat food smells good, I always get tempted to taste it when I put some in my cat's bowl.

My nephew actually ate out of her bowl when he was younger. Was hilarious to see.

You know, I would have never figured you were a degreed zoologist. I will have to give more credence to your opinions on animals in the future. 😉

yea sure, i'm sure you are a doctor, a chemist, and a food scientist as well. i'd put more faith in iams knowing and hiring people that know what they are doing over some dude on the net.
