1.6A Northwood...an overclocking mofo @!!!!

I just fired up my 1.6a gig Retail P4 and also my Asus P4s333 mobo that I got last night and it is Running Smooth as silk @2.3 Vcore is 1.6 , running the memory 1:1 and the CPU temp so far with no load is 40C. I tried to run it @ 150 mhz but I think the Video puked because when it fired upo the graphics where pretty messed up.

Are there any tricks to find out which component is failing for certain on my system?

512 meg of Pc2100 Crucial -2 sticks running the speed @ auto
Asus P4s333 Mobo
3com 10/100 TX Nic
Visiontek Geforce 3 ti 200 Not overclocked

Yes there is. Switch out the part with another one.
 
Problem is I need some proven parts to be able to swap

I guess what I am looking for is there any tricks in the bios that could be done to make it run faster

If you are talking about individual components such as Modem, vid card, NIC, etc, then the old tried and true method of pulling everything out works best. After you have all "extra" components out, overclock to what seems to be a stable level on your cpu. Now add in one component and reboot and run the system through some related tests to see if a problem occurs. If not, move on to the next item. And so on, and so on. It takes some work but you will eventually find out what works and what doesn't. You can even take it further by backing off on the overclocking as each component shows trouble, until you reach the point at which that component will not be unstable. Record that level for each item and then you will find the highest level that all are "safe" in. Lots of work and very boring, but it does work if you have the patience and time.
 
I would say a 700 o/c (144) is pretty good and u should be happy. Try running the memory at its fastest
4:5 where FSB =144 and memory speed = 180 with fastest RAM timings. I upped my DDR voltage to 2.7 and everything is dandy.
Mine is cheap Samsung modules running at 175 (140FSB and memory at 4:5 but using slower timings) and I still get around 2640/2639 in Sandra memory tests.
At 150FSB the most obvious things are NICs and modems. Nvidia cards, SB live/audigy, HDs etc can take the 37.5PCI bus fairly easily but no guarantees since no 2 components are the same. I check mine by trial and error - upping the FSB until something gives.
NOTE: In the long run running at higher than 37.5 can damage any component.
 
I would lower your fsb just a little, and try setting the ratio at 4:5. If it works, your pc2100 will be read as pc2700 at boot up.
 
I have the 1.6A @2.37 gig P4 Northwood and Asus P4s333 Mobo! and 256 PC2700 KingMax

Running at 148 FSB, Vcore 1.6500, DDR voltage 2.7 and memory ratio set to auto.

I am stable and can run Prime 95 for over 10 hours..

change the DDR voltage to 2.7 and maybe 150 fsb is pushing that PC2100 Ram ?

I have my GF OC to 225/510.

Anyway, i have tried using a higher FSB than 148 and my pc would not boot up.

Maybe I should have tried more vcore but i think 148 is fine.

Any higher and my PCI cards might be pushed and I don't like increasing the Vcore too much
 
I have the same board and CPU, I had to set my mem timings to auto to get it to do 150FSB (Crucial PC2100 RAM). What program are you using to monitor your temps. Asus probe doesn't work with bios 1004, it will tell you 40C all the time, mine will sometimes fluctuate to 41 under load, but I know that's not right. When I stilll was on the 1003 bios it seemed to work fine other than it wouldn't register temps below 40C. Check your temps in your BIOS and compare them to Asus probe, they will probably be very different...mine were and I know others are having the same problem. Just FYI, as far as I know, there isn't currently a temp monitoring software that works with this board. Not a big deal though since it's impossible to fry a P4 anyway.
 
I am actually using the Asus Probe.

IT stays at 40 C always when the CPU Temp is under 40 C ( actually )

Under full load, the Asus Probe reads that under full load i run at 45 C

Seems about right as I am running AS2 and an AVC sunflower HSF.

Checking them in your bios is not the best, as the cpu is not under full load.

BTW, i am running bios 1005
 
Doesn't the P4S333 have lockable PCI/AGP speeds? I thought it had settings similar to the Turbo setting on the P4B266, maybe I'm mistaken. That would sure help ya hit higher FSB if PCI devices are your problem. Asus goofed on several boards in terms of temp readings, the P4B266 boards are the same with the 40C minimum, and mine refuses to show anything but 40C period, BIOS or AsusProbe. MBM5 works fine though.

2.3Ghz is a little above the average o/c, so your doing good already😀. Try running with just one stick of ram and try 150 again.
 
my current PCI is at 37

if i go up to 155 it would be 40

I only have one stick of 256 PC2700 DDR 😛

My Costa Rica and PS supply may also be holding me back on OC More.

I am happy with 148 FSB 😀
 
ASUS Probe is not reliable and should not be used for monitoring your temps. It has always been flakey. Get MBM5 or something similar to check your actual temps.
