I have 1GB ram in my current laptop. Going to be working a lot with adobe photoshop, illustrator and indesign, and want more ram to ease that.

Since the laptop already has 2x512 mb installed memory, I will have to throw one of them out. This means I have to options:

A) Buy a 1GB stick, getting 1.5 GB total
B) Buy a 2GB stick, getting 2.5 GB total ram

Which should I go for? I heard something about windows xp not supporting more than 2GB ram, so 2.5 GB might not be feasible, considering 2GB costs so much more than the 1GB stick.

Im not sure where you heard XP doesnt support more than 2gb, that is incorrect. XP32 suppots upto 4 with usually 3+ usable (depending on your hardware)

Windows XP should have no problem at all recognizing and using all of the 2.5GB of memory. If you honestly think you would be using more than 1.5GB of memory in your application usage, you might as well go for the 2.5.

Thanks for the replies. Dell just told me that my laptop (D420) can't handle more than 2GB ram on the motherboard, so I guess the XP issue is moot.

So I need to figure out if the difference between 1.5 and 2GB ram in photoshop+illustrator is worth paying ~150 USD for.

If you are paying $150 you are paying over the odds. Even a standard Dell 2GB module should only set you back $80 - $100. Photoshop will love you for 2GB if you are more than a light user. :)

I have read three times. Still scratching my head..........
Am I the only who sees this?

$100USD is $100USD in Denmark, the US, Fiji, Australia or Zimbabwe

Buy it in USD from the US. Done.
