"Aides said about three-fourths of the $80 billion was expected to be for the Army, which is bearing the brunt of the fighting in Iraq. It also was expected to include money for building a U.S. embassy in Baghdad, which has been estimated to cost $1.5 billion."

1.5 BILLION for a fuvking BUILDING?? Don't tell me,another hush, hush no bid contract for Halliburton and Bectel?? This is beyond comprehention and an absolute RIP OFF of the tax payer.

Amazingly though... we never have enough for National Health Care system so that EVERYONE in the US can afford quality health care. Nope but we sure as HELL have 1-2 BILLION for a building in Iraq...

Bushit has really shown where his priority's are with this one.....

How much do you really know about Halliburton...it is not considered a no bid contract if no other companies are willing or capable of taking on the mission in question.

I worked with Brown& Root, a subsidy of Halliburton, and I can tell you that they provide world class support to our soldiers in the field...they have the technological capabilities to provide everything from infrastructure to a taste of home for our deployed soldiers in the field...and their project managers deploy along side our soldiers, sharing the same dangers and hardships that they do. In the Balkans, Brown & Root provided construction for everything from mess halls to airfields, bunkers to movie theaters...and they even took on some of the moor dangerous missions such as minelifting and clearing because they were able to bring into theater equipment that was far superior to anything in our inventory.

And by the way...the American military's dependency on Halliburton did not start with the Bush administration...the Army used to have a lot of these resources organic to its active duty structure, but we lost a lot of equipment and expertise during the downsizing of the early 90s...and when we took on the Balkans mission we no longer had this equipment and expertise to truly get the job done...so those fat juicy contracts that established the military's ties to Halliburton started on Clinton's watch.

we never have enough for National Health Care system
Maybe because our medical system is inflated by insurance companies that take too large a piece of the pie, doctors who over prescribe medication to avoid lawsuits, and patients who demand prescriptions for every cough, sniffle and sore throat...we have ourselves to blame for the state of the health care system in this country...and health care is not an entitlement anyway.

Of course we should let the experts handle it. However, there should be some accountability and some explanation.

There are actually Iraqi companies that can undertake this type of project?

This will end up being the most secure building in all of Iraq. And needingly so.

Are you joking? The billions we are throwing over into Iraq for the past several years has not helped them figure out how to stop the litany of terrorist willing to drive cars stocked with explosives into buildings. Nor the ones with them strapped to their vests who walk up to the front door. This building better be burried far beneath the ground if it is truely to be the safest in Iraq.

That's what I'd be afraid of. If it's too solid to bomb from outside, they'll find ways to slip bombs inside. I guess if we make it a fortress, it will contain the explosions and spare the neighbors.

There was another interesting line in the article. The CBO is now estimating our 10-year costs in Iraq to total $1.4 Trillion at current levels; only $1 trillion if we scale down operations. Think of all the good we could do with that money at home.

What do you suggest the government do?

I didn't say it would be the safest, just the most secure, and it would have to be, for the reasons in which you speak.

The US has probably found an oilwell right under their embassy and are secretly planning to build an oilrig within their embassy. That's why the price tag is so hefty. And who said that Iraqi oil wasn't going to pay for the war ;)

Uhh,you don't have to be an engineer to understand square footage vs $$1.5 billion. I've been in and around the construction industry both homes and commercial buildings for over 30 years. A fuvking shopping mall might cost $100 million, and yet 1.5 BILLION for an Embassy building??

Our city wants to build a new 35,000 seat arena. Total cost which includes buying old buildings on the site and tearing them down...about $22 million.

I'm not an engineer but I know a GD rip-off when I see one,how bout you??

More fear priced into gas (oil) than supply currently.
