According to the International Federation of Phonographic Industries, one third of music CD's today are pirated at a cost to the industry of over $4 billion.

According to a music industry group, one out of every three compact discs sold last year was pirated at a cost to the industry of $4.6 billion. There was some good news to be found in the report, as piracy only grew 2 percent year over year, which was the smallest increase in half a decade

They are talking about the ones you buy from the guys with the tables set up on the street, not the ones you burn at home.

The more and more they charge for crap music the less and less they'll get in sales. The more they try to copy proof the CDs (making some even unplayable on old CD players) the more and more people will try to circumvent their schemes.

They should just take a clue and learn about economics. If they actually lowered prices, or had more varied options, I'm sure less people would pirate, or at least more people would buy the CDs in question. Raising prices will not generate you more income on objects that are optional.

 Yet another dumbass group that thinks that those who pirate anything would automatically go out and buy the product if the pirated version wasn't available to them and then spreading ignorant propaganda about it. For most pirates, if the pirated version wasn't available to them, they STILL wouldn't go buy it, paying stupid money that everybody knows goes mostly into the pockets of greedy recording labels instead of directly to the artist.

Sigh...

I haven't bought a CD in nearly a decade. The good news for the industry? I've discovered hundreds of bands I would likely have never heard or given a chance.

there was this really great group called fancy's showbox that showcased their music on mp3.com some time ago. i think it's all gone now, though -- i can't seem to find them listed (haven't visited mp3.com in ages). i agree -- it gives you the ability to try new music that you wouldn't have thought about.

i haven't bought any CDs recently with the exception of a very few. i also lost the CD jacket to one of my favorite albums so i am sad. :(

To combat this kind of thing in china, I remember reading that they were going to sell CD's at a discounted rate. And not a 'we'll settle our conspiracy / monopoly lawsuit by lowering prices from $15 to $14' discount they did in the States, but, like $2 or something per CD.

If they *really* wanted to fix the problem, that's how they'd do it globally.

I'm one of those so-called audiophiles.....so MP3s dont' work for me b/c my system makes them sound like crap.

But I won't buy CD's at retail. I get them for $5 shipped from BMG. And the only CDs I buy nowadays are "Best ofs" or Compilations.

Buying a CD for $13 with one hit on it ain't going to work nowadays. The teens (who buy the most music) are smarter than what the studios let on.

Kids will buy a used CD on Ebay or Amazon, burn it, then resell it at near zero loss.

Too bad they are too stupid to realize if they lowered their price their sales would go through the roof. They could put the pirates out of business and even more people would buy CDs if the price was right.....but they will never get this concept. People only pirate because the price is TOO high and the quality these days just isn't there.
