Finally got and made the cable, and it works, yay! The problem with the ready light, etc. has returned though, anyone else getting those symptoms?

someone was asking if anyone who currently owns a digi cam bought one of these. i have to say i did. why you ask. i play outside a lot in not to environmental friendly situtations for a camera that i paid $400 + for. let's just say that i dont mind too much if i toast a $10 investment, but if i destroyed my other camera i'd be pretty freggin pissed. so for me it is more than worth the investment.

There are no Ritz stores around me, otherwise I'd give this one a shot. After reading some of the articles, it also says you can call Ritz and order it, but I tried that and the guy said they are out of stock.

Ahh! Now it all makes perfect sense to me. I had read some of the prior Slashdot articles, talking about this "Ritz" camera, and I was thinking that you got it by sending in some box-tops from Ritz crackers, or something. I was disappointed because I went to the store and looked through, and there were no camera offers on the back of the box. I had totally forgotten that there was a "Ritz" camera company. :p

Sounds like a neat hack, I might pick one up.

:Q You're serious aren't you?

Man, the hot spot on the camera is really small. But hey, that's a lot better than what I have right now. (Nothing)

Oh yes, you wanted a mod so you can adjust the focus. Ask and ye shall receive

When I score myself one of these I'm going to try something a little fancier involving a few well-placed gears. I'll let you know how it goes.

It's hackable, just hasn't been hacked yet. Apparantly the interface language/codes are different, so they don't know how to download the pictures, wipe the memory, etc. Only a matter of time though.

Actually if I were you I'd get one now. They're easy to find now, but once they find out how to hack them more than likely they'll be incredibly hard to get hold of. Or worse, Ritz could discontinue them because nobody is returning them. It's $20 you're going to spend sometime, might as well be now. Unless, of course, they offer a wild deal on them, but I doubt it. I have a feeling these are priced at exactly what they need to be in order to make a profit.

??? Where do you live???

Even though the LCD version appeared before Christmas, none of the stores where I live have ever had any when I've checked. The same goes for the city where my family lives.

In all of San Antonio Texas (The 9th largest city in the US) only ONE of the Ritz/Wolf stores even carries these disposable digital cameras at all. And that store hasn't had any since November.

Space is kinda tight in there, but give it a go.
What would be better than what I did (your link) is to have the focus adjustment from the front of the camera; directly infront of the lens, so you can have 360 degress of adjustment range and wider range of focus.
Gears seems like waay too much work for this el cheapo thing.

Yes, you'll find that the vast majority of these cameras suck if you look for other pics around the web.

I've only heard rumors, nobody has actually said "the ritz in <city> has them"... though I would be interested in that if they ever do come out.

no these cameras are not the greatest but for $13 what do you expect. also in adverse weather conditions what would you rather destroy your new $1k slr or a $13 camera you got that is easily replaced?

I figure I"ll toss it in my glove box and if someone drives into me get some evidence.

So I take it the best way to find this camera is one of these Store Locators and drive right?

Ritz
Wolf
Walgreens
Radioshack

and bring a print of the image for the Dakota Digital Single-Use Camera from the original link for reference right?

They're usually sitting right next to the cash register.

cool, I think I'll drive down and get 2 or 20 :)

btw that link was actually for the teardown of the camera... I think that google.com could supply enough info that I can keep that 2k for my own. The link was actually provided from here which has some good reads on alternate connection methods and palm connection mods, etc... not a bad read.

Sorry for the relink, didn't see the info on cexx.org/dakota posted earlier

another article.

info for building USB cable/palm thing

Those were probably also posted above, but I don't feel like looking ;).

Anyway, after doing the USB port method, I'd have to say that the palm method sounds better since it doesn't require opening up the camera and cutting a hole in the side.

I just stopped by ritz and ordered 2 and the salesman knew about what people are doing with these things! He said ritz is considering discontinuing them because of the "hack" as he called it. He also said they have pushed back the LCD version indefinitely to consider how to deal with this before they release that one.

Does anyone know if these cameras are even available in Georgia? It seems like they were only sold in select markets out west. I really want to try this, but I can't find them online, and the local Walgreen's don't have them.

Thanks

I have no solder tonight, but I have a soldering gun. I need to (a) remove an unused wire from the palm III/VII connector, (b) extend the wire on the palm connector by connecting another wire to it, (c) connect that wire to pin2 on the palm III/VII connector. I have no solder, just a soldering gun at my disposal, is there anyway I can do the above?

P.S. reason I need to extend the wire is because the pcb on the connector doesn't have a trace from pin2, so I need to
connect it directly.
