Brand new system 1.2ghz athlon/t-bird? been running about an hour now temps are:

Board: 39.0 c
CPU: 63.0 c

is this too hot? what would be considered too hot for this cpu? It's currently only running RC5 and sitting idle in windows98se.

Thanks

Wow, that is quite hot.
I'd check on the accuracy of your temp probes, but judging by your board temp, that sound about correct.
You might want to beef up your case ventilation.
Is your system 100% stable?

seems it so far, but so far I haven't had a whole lot of time to mess around and see what's what.

i had the same problem with my temps. I had a 1ghz TB running at about 64c and thats with a alpha pal6035 HS with a delta black label fan! i added some case ventilation and it dropped over 10c.

If you're using the default heatsink, your temps are a bit underread(by about 8C versus core temp).

But the alarming number is teh 39C mb temp. Add some case cooling, and you'll do a lot better.

Case cooling will definately help.

I just got my 1.1 Ghz system and after playing Unreal for a few hours my temp was 36C Mobo and 55C CPU. I then removed the thermal pad with some thermal goup, replaced the CPU fan with a quiet panaflo, put in a slot fan and a 80mm exhaust fan and my temp went down to 29C Mobo and 44C CPU. Planning on adding an intake fan and that might lower it a bit too.

Also try to lessen the voltage if you don't plan to overclock. I can lower my voltage to 1.5 and still run stable, that will certainly decrease the amount of heat released.
