Hopefully the link works...

This is a closeout, and if you want it you might have to do some serious searching for it... (Not available online, Call your local store) but it looked like a decent price to me as uneducated as I am about such things...

1/2 ct. tw.* diamond engagement ring features 1 round center diamond and 8 tapered baguette side diamonds set in 14K white gold.

There are several others available in the Jewelry Closeouts section... $700 to $1100 off it looks like. Haven't found a direct link that works or I'd post it...

Found it... http://e.sears.com/a/hBCiNwiAM$zVoAWpab6AWPyVd1L/ie75

Just remember in the jewelry business, they price at 75% off the 'original price' just to get people's emotions going. Their plan, from day on, is to make a profit equal to that 75% off point.

While it's true that some jewelry stores will mark things up just to put them on sale (I usually see 50% off not almost 75%), I don't think sears plays that game to the same extent. Remember this isn't a typical jewelry store... I did a little checking around, and even ice.com wants $500 to $600 for a 1/2 carat tw white gold engagement ring.

Bah....the fact is that you're getting 9 diamonds that equal 1/2 ct. This is a hot deal if your girl doesn't know anything about jewelry. I don't know many ladies that wouldn't laugh at you if you actually tried to pass this thing off on them.

It's not "some", it's all. It's the way the jewelry business is done. And you can't just compare the stone's weight, there are tons of other factors involved when checking against competitive prices.

No it's not all jewelry stores. Didn't anyone ever teach about not making blanket statements like that? I know a couple who owns a jewelry store back in Louisiana. They don't do that... And they get a good deal of business because of it. And when they do have sales it's something else. They've said people line up at the door waiting for them to open.

That ice.com ring here is H-I (H-J on baguettes) in color, and I1 - I2 in clarity. Not exactly top of the line materials there either for $200 more. The sears ring is I-J and I2-I3, but has a 1/3 carat center over a 1/4... So it's likely to be pretty close to a wash... Neither is something I'd want to give, but for some it is a hot deal.

Scarpazzi - That's not saying much for those women. The simple fact is there are a lot of people that couldn't afford to spend what many of us do on a single ring. Guess I'm lucky that the one I found is more interested in what she likes than how much it cost. She still doesn't know and doesn't want to... And FYI, it was handmade in Ireland with diamonds surrounding an emerald, was flown over, flown back for a change, and flown back again and was much more than the ring above. The earrings for her birthday were a few times this. But I do find it a shame that for those that all they may be able to afford is something like this, (doesn't this forum have a number of younger folks in it?) or might prefer to spend the money on something like a honeymoon, money towards a house downpayment, etc., that some have to threadcrap...

Hmm.

Doesn't sound like they deserve one anyway.

Either someone's a cheap bstd or someone's not bringing home the bacon...

I suppose you also believe that a Celica "Looks Fast.", too. That "general rule of thumb" was created and promoted by the jewelry industry. Last I checked, a ring signified something special... not how much money you made.

Some of us are fortunate in that we can spend decent amounts of money on something such as an engagement ring, but some are not. That doesn't mean they love their significant other any less than we do.

Think before you speak.

I have just read it on Slashdot and could not resist to post it here:

"Carnegie Institution researchers have learned to produce 10-carat, half-inch thick diamonds at rates of about 100 micrometers per hour, which in the diamond biz is blazingly fast. And these aren't cruddy, yellow diamonds either, but gem-quality stones."

Perhaps in a couple of years we will be able to buy 1ca gems for well under $400. 🙂
