Aren't the larger SSD's supposed to read and write faster than the smaller ones?

They are but you generally need to be comparing the 240GB drives with the 80GB ones to see how noticable it is. But even then, it depends on the application. The largest difference is in the incompressable writing tests though.

True, but then not like the OP will pay extra for old tech. Most will get the cheapest they can find, which generally have the higher failure rates to start with.

Naw, you just have to keep your eyes open for good deals. From BF through early january, you could often buy intel 320 series ssd's up to 160gb for less than $1/gb AR. I'm hoping to get $.75/gb this year on BF for 240-256gb ssd's, or maybe $1/gb on a quality 6gb/s 240-256gb ssd.

Im with groberts on this one.
RAID-0 for me too.
I have - (3) Intel 320's 160gb running RAID-0 and a 750 spinner for storage.
