1.0GHz Thunderbirds are GREAT overclockers!!!

OK, this is the second 1.0GHz Thunderbird processor I've got, so it may be just jumping the gun, but this 1.0GHz chip has gotten to 1.2GHz at 1.85V. The other one performed just as well, but I cracked the core with a FOP-38 :( .

Anyways, I want to know if anybody else has had this kind of success overclocking the 1.0GHz chips? I've seen compuwiz and bonkers (one of those guys, not quite sure which) reach speeds of 1.3GHz+. I think these chips are great overclockers. Let me know what you guys think.

mine didn't overclock that well. i only got to 10.5×106. still over 1.1 GHz but i was hoping for more. it wouldn't post at 11X or higher even at 1.85V. interesting thing is that i can post at my OC speed at 1.6V and be stable at 1.7V but i can't post with a 11X multiplier with max voltage and a 100MHz FSB.

Not all of them. I have just went thru some week 50 and 51 that would not break 1150 and as low as 1100. You got luck. :)

white,

What mainboard are you using? With my MSI K7T pro2-A my Duron 800 can do 105x9.5 at 1.85v. I can't do 10x100, but I can do 101x10 at 1.85v. Very weird. Well I can do 10x100 but sometimes my machine POSTs sometimes it doesn't. Just a couple of minutes ago I rebooted and 10x100 POSTed and its working fine. Last time I got 10x100 to POST I ran rc5 for almost 24 hours straight without my system locking up. I also played Counter-Strike for about 2 hours to on top of that. Yet if I power my system down and cold boot it won't POST at 10x100. I was using the 10b14 BIOS an used the 2.1 BIOS and both randomly boot at 10x100. I'm using 2.1 now because the drive performance in 10b14 BIOS is horrible... ran HDTach and got 12000kps/15.4random/9.1mbps-burst with 10b14 BIOS and with 2.1 I get 22339kps/11.4ms-random/51.2mbps-burst.

my 1 Ghz is very stable at 1150(11.5 X 100). At 1200 it's not 100% stable so I don't use it at that speed.

subversal,

i'm using the same MB as you are with the OC bios. it's weird that sometimes things work and sometimes it doesn't. maybe my chip can do some more. i guess i'll tinker with that when i get home later today.

i didn't know that the OC bios degraded HD performance. i'd only tested memory bandwidth, but since my drives are slow 5400RPM drives, i guess it doesn't really matter that much. between the german 2.01 bios, the TW 2.1 bios and the unsupported OC bios, the unsupported one gave me quite a boost in memory bandwidth so i stuck with it.

Yeah the OC BIOS gave me a 30/40 point boost in Sandra and 90 point boost in 3dmark... but not worth it for me at least with my faster HDD.

hi
i was wondering why my kt7pro2 didnt post with my duron 700 at 800 when its runing hot and i restart it but it seems that u also has the same prob. id like to know if any of u knows why my duron 700 dosnt run stable at 900 at 1.8v (bios 1.8) since ive seen ppl that claims to reach 1gh whith the same processor.
can u also tell me why does it always post at 700(default) but at 800 when the system processor is cold (below 35/36ºC) it posts but above that sometimes it does and other it doesnt! at 800 i have 1.6v and in w98se its rock stable the only problem is that it sometimes doesnt post nor 800 nor 808,816 etc but if it is cold it does!
my normal temp for the system when its hot is 39/40ºC cpu/system with a BIG heatsink/fan from Spire!
thanks anyway!!!

I have a Slot A T-bird1000 which seems to overclock very well also.I have ran it at1150 with jumperless FSB with total stability, waiting for a Northwind Rev3 card to arrive.

Posting is meaningless. They usually post at speeds much higher than they will run stable. I can post at 1.35ghz, but it isn't stable above ~1150mhz.

So you know, not only am I posting at speeds of 1.2GHz+, I'm also running stable and temperatures aren't exceeding 48C. Yes, to some this might seem a little warm, but it is well within the operating temperature of the chip. I'm just saying that I wouldn't be posting here if all my chip did was post at 1.2GHz. It posts, and it runs, well. Bottom line.

Well, running stable at 1184 (11x107, xtra spped courtesy of Sandra)for 2 months now. Temps don't exceed 43c fully loaded.

Except when I'm fully loaded.

3dMark around 8200.

Just lucky I guess.

I depends alot on you have a "Blue" or "Green" Athlon, one is built using aluminium, the other copper. I have a brand new Athlon 1ghz that is running @ 1200+ on Win2k very well, my older 1ghz like others have mentioned 1150 is max, at least with Taisol HS/Fan with Artic Silver.

Does the Taisol HS work well for anyone else???

My "purple" 1GHz (week 48) is running at 1.2 Gig (10x120)under Win2K. Steady as a rock. With the KT7A-Raid I did not have to do the pencil job. Small glitch: must run the IBM 75GXP 46 GB off the HPT370 channel to get ATA100 otherwise Via 686B and Win2K will detect it as PIO drive. Great mobo.

I'll say I've had quite good luck. Running my 1 Gig Tbird @ 1260 (105x12) at default voltage.
It's a tad on the warm side, 50 degrees under load. But it's stable and scary fast.

Nikepete, have you tried running 9x133? That would get you 1197 and the faster, now supported 133mhz FSB, which has shown impressive gains in tests. You might have to do the pencil trick..

I'll probably do the pencil trick later on. There isn't much difference between 120 and 133 anyway. For now, it's blazing fast for me.

Nikepete,
Hey, I just bought a duron 750, how do I tell what week it is? Its 'purple' core as you say... I haven't bought a mobo yet because I'm waiting for the kt7a to arrive, but incidentally I did buy my hd... the ibm deskstar 7200rpm 46gigger you were just talking about! So is it a bios problem or something?

To check the week of your processor, look at the number that's in the middle of the code on the third line. I think it's the third line. It SHOULD be the third line. Anyways if you see something like 47, 48, 50, 52, etc. then you'll know that it's the week number.

I run my gig at 1.2GHz...stable as a rock an it is 30C at idle and 46 at load. Decent little system if you ask me.
