was in LA with a friend and we saw fake Rolex Watches for sale, one was almost $2,000. I know the model is was supposed to be costs well over $15g's but who the fuck would buy a FAKE watch that costs this much? it had the swiss second hand movement which is pretty bad ass. But if I'm going to buy a knock off I'm going to buy a POS, if I want a Rolex I'll buy the real deal. Anyone actually seen one of these? The guy selling was telling me it had a certificate of authenticity and nobody could tell the difference because it was an exact replica down to every last detail. I'm no watch expert but they did look the same to my naked eye.

Yes, I've seen them. You're paying for what is ultimately a decent quality automatic movement, and that's going to cost no matter who manufactures them. ETA SA, for example, produces a lot of Swiss movements that are of reasonable quality, but again, you're still going to pay a premium over a quartz movement.

Someone that knows Rolexes can usually tell fairly easily whether or not it's a knock-off. I'm no expert, but I can usually spot a fake.

I have a friend that bought a "Rotex" in cuba. He wore it as a joke, and because he needed a watch.

I have a two tone datejust I bought in 1994 that was only 2500$ and its real, so yeah a fake for 2k thats just wacked. Buying preowned Rolex's is FTW since over time you will acutally make money off them if you wanna sell it.

i'm not sure you'll make money, but you won't lose much if any.

I had an early 90's submariner no-date that I bought in 1999 for $2200.. sold it in 2007 for $2000 - i probably could have gotten 2200 for it but there's not a big market for Rolexes where I live.

Last year, I bought a 2006 two-tone (black & gold) Submariner from my bro who bought it in the Bahamas right before prices went up. I plan on keeping this thing for a long while.

Too bad I don't have any sons to will it to (or give upon graduation).

I do not understand why you would pay more than $100 for a watch. No matter the kind.

Chicago's got some good stuff. A friend of mine was showing a video of someone and himself in a studio with master tapes of 25 or 6 to 4 playing from deck to deck with tape flying in the air redubbing it and the delay even in the video sounded incredible.

My first girlfriend was a Chicago fanatic. Ahh, to be young again. ;)

For that much money one could buy a real Omega. Sure it's not a Rolex, but good lord an Omega can is still a damn fine watch.

Same reason people spend $1,000 on a pair of speakers, or $1,000 for a leather briefcase, or a $5,000 couch. You could buy a pair of speakers for $39 at walmart, get a briefacse at staples for $40 and a couch from IKEA for $199.

I personally find most Rolex designs to be a bit too flashy and gaudy for my tastes, a sort of "look at me!" style. Some models are handsome, but don't warrant the price, IMHO. But I can understand why they cost what they do and don't think it's ridiculous for people to want/buy them.

This.

I want $12k/pair speakers, and a ~$25k 5.1 speaker system one day. My gf among others go  "how can they sound better then a few hundred dollar speakers, or even a few thousand dollar ones?". The same thing with me buying Surefires. Is it *just* a flashlight? Maybe, but it's an amazing light that (provided I don't leave it in my gf's purse again :p) I'll have for years. People get enjoyment out of things they buy, and for some people it's speakers/electronics, others it's watches.

I also find Rolex designs very flashy. They are very "look at me!" and I prefer something that is "I'm not obvious, but if you notice me I'm classy/sophisticated" in jewelery/watches. Then again, I don't like watches (or any other jewelery) for that matter.

Your other listed items have a real use that a cell phone I have to carry can't provide me.

I'm a big fan of quality. Period.

I agree with some of the others that I don't like to be too flashy.

My dad has a love for watches ... most of which he has had for years, and they are frickin' nice.

Of course I have a Citizen Eco-Drive that I like just fine :) ... my dad got one on a cruise after he saw mine ... I think it's his beater. lol

Same reason people spend $1,000 on a designer cell phone, or $1,000 for a designer cell phone. You could buy a cell phone for $20 at walmart, get a cell phone at staples for $50 and a cell phone from Verizon for free with contract.

Better?
