What gears does your car have in it now? Is it auto or manual trans?
I've owned 2 Mustang GTs and modded one quite a bit. I'm not real familiar with the new ones but they shouldn't be too much different and should respond similarly to mods.
Edit-If it's a stick, one of the first things is get an aftermarket short throw shifter. I had a Hurst in mine with a Momo knob and it looked much better than stock and the shifting was much more precise. Another good mod is subframe connectors. This will stiffen up the chassis and improve handling. If you have 3.27 gears, or worse, 2.73 (I doubt they still put this in the Mustang but you never know) I'd swap them out for 3.55 or 3.73 (which is what I had). Warning though, your speedo calibration will be off a bit with the 3.73 and your gas mileage will suck.
I'm not sure how efficient the stock headers are but that's a great mod along with mufflers or a cat back exhaust. Doing one without the other is pretty much a waste of money though unless you're just going for loud. High flow cats and X-pipe would be even better.
