Just trying to get your guys opinion on this deal.

http://annapolis.craigslist.org/mcy/2903732944.html

Clean, well maintained. Runs great. 11k miles with Akrapovic aftermarket exhaust tuned by shop. Competition Werkes fender elimination kit with clear lenses and sliders. New rubber front and back. Hydraulic fluids just changed. Passed MD inspection two years ago. Large helmet and mesh jacket included.

The guy said he'd drop it down to $3500 without the gear. Tires are new. Clean title with no leins.

Thats cheap for this time of year. In december there were deals like that here in indy. Now that bike here would be 4500 or so.

Depends on where you live but that looks clean to me.

no 600 supersports go for a high of $6000 and low of $3500.

But the $3500 are normally carb-ed, or dropped with minor dings and a dented gas tank.

This is from what i gather. The ad is gone so i cant see the pictures but If its clean it would be pretty cheap.

When people post up bikes as "well maintained" ask them what they did. Because normally the average SS 600 rider only does/know to do the oil change every 3000-5000 miles. Nothing more nothing less. No chain cleaning and adjustments, coolant flushing, brake bleeding yearly, valve adjustments. They just ride and stunt. Not saying all of them do but i know a good amount of them that treat it like a car only do an oil change at the end of the season.

When i started riding last year, i took the time to learn most things. And found 2 of my CBR buddies was riding with WAY WAY too much chain sloop. I adjusted it but they really dont care about maintaining it. Just how fast it goes and putting on slip-ons.

That sounds like a great deal if it looks maintained. Pull the seat off, lift the tank, ask about oil changes..

Have a cop out to check the vin. I would want to meet at the seller's house, otherwise it would start to sound like a steal.

This is true, but at 3500 and 11k he should probably plan on chain and sprockets, and normal maintenance. Hydraulic fluids changed insinuates the brakes were bled..

Moogo, also check the chain adjusters to look for weird wear to make sure it wasn't wheelied all the time. Also push the forks down hard with the front brakes applied and make sure there's no oil residue.. Sometimes seals go bad on their own, but at 11k it would mean it has most likely had the front end slammed down.

That's definitely an FI bike. It probably doesn't even have a valve adjustment until 15k but you might want to check. It would also be nice to see records from the break-in first service.

Post deleted, so someone probably bought it. I was going to ask if the akropovic was just the muffler or the whole thing (i think they only come in the whole thing). Thats 1k right there. Does that also mean it comes with a power commander?

Since i don't see other details, I'm going to assume even with another $500 in maintenance (new chain, sprockets, all fluids, whatever else you can think of), it would have been a good deal.

Nah. I've been riding a 250 for a few years now. Thinking about upgrading but don't want to spend too much because it'll be parked in a covered parking area but not garaged. My roommates 750 was stolen like a month ago. Would like to eventually take it to a track day. These things feel like a money pit though so I'm still on the fence.

A 600RR in good running condition won't be a money pit. I've owned an F3 & currently own a 1KRR & it's not like that at all. I change the oil every 2500 miles & have the scheduled maintenance done & it runs great.

If you're that nervous about it, find a good local mechanic & have the seller meet you at their shop & have them take a look at it. Good condition used bikes are sold all the time & run fine. Many of the guys I ride with bought their bikes used.

Money pit in what way? Bikes are pretty simple to keep running.

It will get stolen, though. I would invest in some sort of heavy duty lock AND alarm, and mentally prepare for it to be gone one day.

What I meant was the open window of riding time seems kind of short but I've been keeping an eye out on craiglist/local forums anyway. How much riding do you guys usually get in during the year?

The guy at the shop was telling me thieves will get a group of 4 together and they'll put a pole through both the wheels and lift it up onto a truck. One of his was stolen and he was able to track the parts down on ebay. The dude ended up serving a year of jail time and he's paying him reperations but it comes in really small payments.

Ah what are your seasons like? Don't you already ride?

I'm comfortable down to 35-40F with decent winter gear. I had a bunch of heated stuff that helped a lot but this varies a ton depending on where you live...

As far as thieves... Yeah that's one way. I've also seen one person put a skateboard under the front wheel and push it into a uhaul, hell, 3 big guys can just pick the thing right up via one person at each bar end and another at rear wheel. There are lots of good vids on youtube to give you an idea of what to be prepared for.

I had a lot of faith in my 2-way alarm.. In other words, they'd better be gone in ~30 seconds before I can run my ass downstairs at home or outside at work. IMO alarm + decent lock will deter 99% of thieves, but as they saying goes.. if they want it, they'll get it.

Personally, I wouldn't spend more than $4k in your situation simply because of theft. I would definitely get a good heavy duty chain or large u-lock, and buy a bike cover then spraypaint/make it look dirty.

I had to replace the battery but was able to ride the other day. Summer gets really humid so it gets tough to ride in full gear. Even with a mesh jacket that's basically a net I start sweating like crazy.

That 2 way alarm sounds like a good idea actually. I'll definitely look into that.

Especially japanese bikes. Insure the crap out of it.

I mean... if you can ride it every 2-3 months, 6 months max, then you're fine. Put the ethanol treatment in the tank and run it for a minute, remove the battery and put it on a tender if it's going to be left alone for longer than a month or so. I'm not sure how the weather plays in with this.. It gets humid and hot in the summer and cold in the winter, dress for it.
