Thought I might lose Juno and go with hotmail, but I decided to give it a month first to see if I got any spam. Didn't use it for anything, didn't give the address out to anyone. Got my first pr0n spam today. :disgust:

Maybe I'll try Yahoo next...

No, but the fact that I didn't use the address for anything means Microsoft gave my address to whoever sent me that message. I'd at least like to be responsible for my own spam. :p

Or it means that the spam company sent the email to every possible email address at hotmail.

a@hotmail.com
b@hotmail.com
c@hotmail.com
d@hotmail.com
.
.
.
zzzzzzzzzzzw@hotmail.com
zzzzzzzzzzzxhotmail.com
zzzzzzzzzzzy@hotmail.com
zzzzzzzzzzzz@hotmail.com

Is your address short or made up of common english words or names?

Edit: If you really want to test if MS is selling their email list to spammers try signing up for an account for the maximum length composed entirely of random characters. For example:
cdvcna4aosdfp09vfbdgvsln8cerkjcsx8n7cfvskj458as9f87v4wcq2lkj3rd98cay4su5vldsafyvao9s@hotmail.com should work. If you get spam at that account, even if you never use it, then MS is selling your info.

They're not giving out addresses. Spam companies generate permutations of e-mail addresses and send them all spam. I get e-mails from Spammers and in the "TO: " section I see my e-mail along with other permutations. It's common ...

I use three hotmail addys and don't get overmuch spam in any of them; only started getting spam about two months ago, though I'd had them for years. Always spam from the asdflkj@asdlfj.com type people, advertising enlargements for anatomy I don't have.

Last I heard, hotmail's smtp servers would give a "user unknown" error if you tried a user that didn't exist. By trial and error, you can use this to determine usernames that indeed do exist. I just tried to test it out, but I can't seem to telnet to any of hotmail's mail servers, for whatever reason.

Microsoft is partnered up with BrightMail, an anti-spam company. At least they're trying to fight it. by the way, I have a hotmail account and I have no problems with spam.
