0.45nm "Penryn" value line?

I've been thinking about getting an E2140 and a cheap motherboard, however I'm running an Opteron 165 at 2.5ghz and I'm not convinced that I would see much difference with a 2140 at 3.2ghz.

SO...a 4.5ghz E2140 sounds great, and would be fast enough to entice me to upgrade.

Does anyone know what the cheapest .45nm CPUs will be? Will there even be a 'value line' of .45nm chips? 😕

It will come in late 2008, or sooner if AMD decides to drop the price of quad below $200 in the next two months. The AMD chips cannot keep up with the Intel offerings. Therefore, AMD will compete on price. Sub $200 AMD quad is a good buy, especially for off-the-shelf PCs.

That makes no sense. They will have a new .45nm quad to replace the Q6600, costing around $266. Are you telling me that they won't have a single dual-core chip below $100? Will their budget line consist of discontinued .65nm CPUs? :Q
 
I'm not sure about the E21x0 equivalents, but I've read that the E4x00 replacements, to be called the E5x00 series, will come out Q2 08. I assume these would be 6MB L2 / 1066FSB chips.

A 2140 @ 3.2GHz would be roughly equivalent to an Opteron @ 3.5GHz (E21x0 has ~10% IPC advantage over K8). If you are actually CPU bound in your applications then you will definitely notice the difference.

I'm not sure if I'm CPU bound. Perhaps in Crysis...but really I'm probably more GPU-bound with my 8800GTS 320mb. :light:

In other games I highly doubt I'm CPU limited at 1080P resolution.

It's a shame that intel's value lineup won't be updated until Q2 2008. I may need to have a look at the new dual-core Phenoms when they come out, if this "3" stepping of theirs is any good. :beer:
 
There will be DC 45nm chips. However, I also expect to see 800/1066MHz 45nm quads below $200 if AMD drops the asking price of their quads to <$200.

i really hope there will be 800/1066 45nm quads below $200. my goal is a quad core @ 4Ghz 😀

Indeed, When!!!

Since 45nm will have a substantial cost advantage over 65nm, Intel will roll all but the lowest volume CPUs to 45nm. Just like the roll from 90nm to 65nm. And in two years they'll roll from 45nm to 32nm, Tick-Tock.

As stated, WHEN, not if.

 
I got a list of the line and prices on both the desktop and server lines. They both look to be a great lineup at nice prices. Just need to find a board to match.

I've seen no mention of a value series line with a lower FSB like the E2XX series, but there will be the following sub $200 1333 FSB dual cores

E8200 2.66ghz

Sort of, Intel continued to sell larger die size Smithfields (Pentium D 805) for cheap when the more economical Presler was on the scene. It took some time till 90nm production wound down and most of the product line was shifted to 65nm.

The 45nm process is introduced on the high end first with Intel this time around, QX9650 with Quad Core's and High End Dual Cores in the Q1 2008. So by Q2 2008 we will have low end Dual Core on 45nm process with the E5xxx.

One the other hand E21xx Series replacements are a tad bit further down the line, it seems. Remember the E21xx Series was introduced a about 10 months after the introduction of Core 2 Duo itself.

E4700 is still Allendale and likely the last full one, only E5xxx Series are Wolfdale-3M which is Q2 2008.

It simple were too early on for Pentium Dual Core replacements.
 
they wont roll over to 45nm all immediately since they do not have all their fabs converted over yet.

they only have 2 fabs that can do 45nm and that almost finished israel one. i'd assume some of the 65nm fabs would get transitioned into doing chipsets (the g serise is 90nm)... and then the 90nm fabs transitioned into getting ready for 32nm etc.

If you do video encoding, you will see a major difference with a 3.2Ghz E2140, as compared to an Opty 165 @ 2.5Ghz. If you mainly game, you might not see a huge difference.

Or hope that AMD fixes the TLB bug and releases the 3.0ghz phenom FX (and everying up to it).... that should bring prices down across the board.
 
As long as AMD still hangs in there, Intel will have to response with pricing to meet AMD in the low cost segment. I just got the E2140 because the Intel roadmap does not appear to have any value line replacement at least 6month down the road, and I can't wait that long. The E2140 at 3Ghz (or 3.2Ghz if I'm lucky) should hold off everything long enough to get the Penryn Quad for under 2 bills. By then the applications and games will better support quad core to make quad actually useful.
