¤i7 System Build¤ Please give me some advices! :)

Hi, it is time I build myself a new computer. I'll be using it for everything, from gaming to video editing and web developing. I gathered a list of parts that are good in my opinion but not completely sure. Please share your thoughts and give me some suggestions!

So there it is, everything comes out to $1,877.90 (heatsink not included). But I wont be buying all the parts from newegg, so total should come out less... I need you guys to help me pick out a good heatsink for the CPU. I will want to overclock the CPU to at least 3.6GHz. I was looking on FrostyTech.com , they made up a list for TOP 5 Intel heatsinks and Spire Thermax II heatsink is in #3 spot. I haven't seen many people talk about this heatsink, but frostytech seems like a reliable source. I'd like to know what you guys think, maybe this heatsink isn't that good and you can suggest me a better one.
Also, I've read that SSD drives have some data corruption and random pauses issues. Can anyone suggest me something other than SSD with similar speeds?
I might just get this instead Western Digital VelociRaptor WD1500HLFS 150GB 10000 RPM 16MB Cache SATA 3.0Gb/s Hard Drive
I already bought the i7 920 CPU with P6T Deluxe mother board.

Thanks in advance 🙂

Hi videogames101, thanks for a quick reply 😉 Ya, I'm not sure if I want to risk with SSD and the one you showed me is too expensive... I just want a fast separate HDD just for OS (windows and linux). My second choice is to get VelociRaptor 150GB.
As for raid, why do I need a raid card for raid 0? The motherboard that I'm getting already has raid controllers.
Also, what you think about this heatsink?

first of all, onboard raid sucks, raid 0 is not worth it with 2 hdd's anyway. you start seeing improved performance with 3-4 drives, and then, you should really be using a hardware raid card that offloads I/O's from the cpu

if you ever get a real raid card you'll figure out the difference. that said, don't let what other people tell you stop you from trying stuff out yourself. put your HDs in raid-0 if you want, no one is stopping you.

XFX is IMO the best brand to buy for video cards, since they typically have the best resale value with their "double lifetime warranty"

your psu is way overkill, look up some benchmarks / reviews of systems running i7 and gtx285, and see how much power they ACTUALLY use. you are only getting 1 video card right?

your RAM is way faster than you need...and hence (way) overpriced. did you do your homework? there's no point in buying fast ram so it can sit idle in between cpu cycles, and that's exactly what your ram will be doing.

that CPU heatsink looks like a clone of the sunbeam core contact freezer (although I couldn't tell you which came first). I couldn't say which is better, they look about the same... both are probably fine.

Thanks for the info wirde247! For now I can't afford a good raid controller card... I was thinking to use raid 5 with four 500gb hard drives, but I've read somewhere that write performance with raid 5 is very bad. So for now until I can afford a good raid card, I will be using raid 0 with 4 hhds. What you think about that? Of course I will have my windows on a separate hard drive and I will need to have my important stuff backed up in case of hd failure in raid...
About the video card, what do you mean XFX has "double lifetime warranty"? Also, I might later on get another gtx285 and SLI them. So the psu IMO is good for the future.
What ram would you recommend that is good for oc?

raid 5 is only slow if you have a crappy or onboard controller... it also uses CPU cycles if you don't have a hardware controller.

4 drives in RAID-0 , do it at your own risk. you may end up changing your mind and switching back to JBOD. I doubt you have the right reasons for wanting to use RAID-0, you are probably thinking along the lines of better load times in games... if that is the case you'll be wasting your efforts and money for very miniscule gain while increasing your risk 4x. One of the only legit users of raid-0 that I've heard of is the moderator from this site... Rubycon, who uses an enormous SAS 15krpm HDD (IIRC) RAID-0 array for a scratch file when working with video editing. Scratch file as in, it doesn't matter too much if a drive fails because she can start the project over.

I got raid-5 because it is the only way to have fault tolerance (i.e. 1 HDD fails, but the RAID array keeps on working) while maintaining high speed transfers (I can blow away any single drive performance easily, except for random access time). That was my requirement when I was building this rig, so RAID-5 was the way to accomplish it. I also have a 1TB external for backups of the RAID array. The controller was expensive but it was well worth it for the speed.

check the XFX website for details about their warranty, it's very straightforward.

I just want better load times period. 😀 I don't really play games that much... Just wanna have a fast system you know... 🙂 I understand that raid-5 uses fault tolerance, that's why I wanted it so I wouldn't have to keep backing up stuff to my 1tb external hd... But anyways, I understand that without the raid controller card there is really no point of using raid. I'm just used to my old computer which has two 250gb hd in raid0. I just made that long time ago and got used to having 1hd on my system and thought that it was faster 😀 well maybe it is faster by little... 🙂
Ya, I checked the XFX website about the Double Lifetime Warranty, pretty sweet! XFX is worth that extra 30$ 🙂

Just because you are fault tolerant does not mean you should not back up your data. They are not one in the same. A corruption on your fault tolerant volume means your data is likely gone redundant or not.
