Faith in democracy, lol.

Democracy only works if the majority of the people in the democracy aren't uniformed idiots, and guess what? They are. Which country am I talking about? Most of them. Certainly Egypt.

It also only works if moneyed interests haven't completely subverted the will of the people through buying off politicians, or if there are actually good options for people to vote for, rather than just choosing between one corporatist sell-out or another.

One of the big reasons for checks and balances that our founding fathers implemented and the big reason many of them wanted a small limited central government was because they understood what could happen when you concentrate power into one entity. They understood the perils and damage of populist movements who throw reason out the window and what they could do to a flat out democracy as they witnessed the madness that was unfolding during the French revolution.

The stupid is strong in this thread. The guy is a fringe element who only managed to get a few thousand people out for a demonstration.

I can find a few thousand people in the US who want a Cross in every Courtroom and School House.

Oh, and wtf is wrong with people just casually mentioning we should invade Egypt? Its a country of nearly 85 million people and would make Iraq look like a walk in the park.

The Arab Spring may turn out to be the best thing that ever happened to the middle east. Any American without faith in Democracy should leave this country immediately.

The difference between here and there is that here people would actually stop those "few thousand people" from destroying priceless artifacts & monuments. The people there either agree with them or don't disagree strongly enough to do anything about it. It's not like the Taliban ruled Afghanistan through overwhelming force; they ruled through the support of their religion and the people fell in line.

Muslims love democracy when they're the majority. So they can vote for Sharia and everyone can submit, usually through an appointed religious leader (despot.) Why do you think there are no real democracies in the Middle East? It's totally incompatible with Islam. When they're not the majority, democracies are evil, Western tyrants trampling their rights as minorities.

I'm not killing anyone over the pyramids. If they destroy them, maybe that'll be a wake up call to people in our nation and they'll realize that Islam allows for two parts of the world: the world of submission (to Islam or Muslims) and the world of war (to be conquered by Islam.)

Fundamentalists from any religion are bad... there must be something in the water in that area that just makes it worse in that region.

No joke, if Egyptians attempted to go destroy the pyramids and sphinx I would fully support using special forces, drones, and if required, later on, a full scale invasion to stop them from doing so.

Fuck sovereignty in a situation like that, those are thousands of years old and crucial historical pieces of human civilization. I'd rather see every living soul in Egypt die than those structures fall.

Sad state of affairs when objects in a country are more important than the sum of it's people...I don't fully disagree with you though. I'd want to see a firm UN response to preserve them.

Can't we just create a country where all fundamentalists can live side by side? Lets turn Gaza into this great nation. We can send our evangelicals and fundamentalist christians immediately since they want to leave now that Obama has won.

Egypt just reopened the pyramids on the 14th, already finishing a 10 year restoration project.

On a similar note, the Chinese should just about be finishing up their bulldozing of the remaining Buddhist statues in Afghanistan. For their copper mine.
Too bad the US could not of done something to stop that...
Remember back in the old days when we got mad at the Taliban for busting the faces off a couple?

You can always rely on Earl to prove Islam is a force of peace by cherry picking a small subset of Muslims in the ME region that aren't crazy, or other isolated incidents of non-Muslims to prove both are the same.

Do you think we should invade Afghanistan or South Korea to help protect those sites?

The Chinese atheist society has a habit of bulldozing with a higher degree of success than Christians putting crosses into public places. See you have your ideal society following their values. You got skin in this game too.

I have no doubt that the majority of egyptians don't want the Pyramids gone, however I'm not sure how hard they'd punish those few thousand if they did strike.

Like I said, it's easy to protect them. Those neutron bombs should work well.

Are we supposed to invade Afghanistan again?

My point is that we are sitting right there in Afghanistan while the sites are being bulldozed.
Lot's of bases in SK too, heck I would bet there's American missionaries involved with those S.Korean Christians

Those structures are the result of insane men's egos gone out of control.... using forced labor to erect gaudy bullshit in their own selfish image. What is their value other than that they are "really old"?

At least the Suez Canal, built in a similar fashion, has use.

The Sphinx is really old. It would be a shame to lose it. Everyone always argues who built it. At one time it had disappeared below the sands.
