Do yourself a favor, though, and go with the NIC. USB has known to cause many problems in this department.

well, after i posted this, i installed AsusProbe. the readings it gave me were fine. so, i used asus' flash utility to update my bios to the latest version (it used to give me problems). everything is running great now. thanks for the tip. it was in fact a bios problem. (duh, i'm an idiot...)

i would just try disabling the Windows Image Viewer and using a program like ACDSee Classic or IrfanView. instructions can be found here.
