Have you tried a using a 98 boot disk and fdisk /mbr to recreate the master boot record? If viruses can hide there, then I would imagine that a Dell BIOS check program could do the same.

The Sybex books are sort of long without giving enough information.
The Coriolis Exam Cram series are more complete, but the information is more condensed (slower reading).
I've read both of them for my Win2K Pro cert., and I've found the Coriolis books to be more helpful.
I had a similar problem. Turns out that the game (Reach for the Stars) was incompatible with the Detonator drivers I had (forgot which version). After upgrading the drivers, it worked fine. Hope this helps.
