western digital HD -- the click of death!

Uh... this isn't the same as a constant, quiet clicking noise linked with hard drive usage is it? My WD drive has been making this same noise since I've gotten it -- about 3 years ago. Just making sure, since I can see how someone would be surpried by this behavior after using hard drives of the...

Why does my computer like to just randomly shut off?

<< Oh, i see you're running XP. XP is the same OS a friend of mine was having problems with, with shutting off. But his was more in the restarting boat. When he originally powers on his PC, it would reboot like 5 times before it actually went into windows. And then restart randomly while he...

Custom server types and IE launch scripts?

This is really two questions in one, but they are somewhat related. First, I use Juno (I accept your sympathy). We actually went for the paid service for $5/month, and it actually works well. My beef with it, though, is that they insist on making you run their bloated program (30 Megs resident...

    GRC vs Reality

You may or may not be familiar with the Gibson Research Corporation, but recently with all of its popularity, many people have come to dislike Steve Gibson and his crusade against bad Internet practices. Even so much as to create a site like grcsucks.com. My question to you is if Steve really...

    XP Licensing and Activation...

Alright. Thanks, although I'm still miffed about the cost of XP, I think I can survive...

    XP Licensing and Activation...

I?ve looked around Microsoft?s site, but I still want to know what I?m going to have to do in this situation. I am very interested in getting Windows XP, but I have tow computers that I could potentially install it on. I know that I would have to buy another license in order to install it on the...

    Internet Explorer help please

This is definitely a problem with IE. You may want to try to go back to some 5.x version. Sorry that I don?t really know much more about doing that, but that?s about all other people who were experiencing the problem did.

    Screen Blank

There's a program called Wizmo at: http://grc.com/files/wizmo.exe that lets you do that and more with a shortcut to the program. From the shortcut, you can assign a key combination that will run it. Sounds like it will work fine for just darkening the screen, although it can also put your...

    Does heat mean speed?

Wow... thanks for the great info. I'll have to keep that formula stuff around for physics class next year :). I guess my dad didn't quite understand the obsession of getting CPU temperatures down, so I'll make sure to run this by him and see what he says. And, yes, my head is in quite good...

    Does heat mean speed?

Everyone seems to agree that running your CPU cooler is better. But, according to my dad (who apparently knows something about computers since he build one from scratch with a Z80 :) ), transistors actually perform better when they?re hot, so by decreasing the heat of the CPU, performance...

    CPU fans = unreliable?

It?s only been a year and one month, and the second HSF on my ?Right Hand? (see my rigs) system is going bad. While the sticker on the top of the fan is off-brand, looking at the bottom reveals that this fan is actually a Sonon fan ? which is apparently what Alpha uses on their PALs as well (and...

New Vid card = no sound. Huh?

Let this be a lesson to all of you out there: the elation that occurs during hardware upgrades muddles thinking and makes those symbols on the back of the card not look right. Yes, I had my plugs in wrong on my sound card since I moved the slots. <Kicks himself and accepts mockery>. Thank you...

New Vid card = no sound. Huh?

This really really sucks. I get a new GeForce3 Ti200 (Visiontek Xtasy6564), tell my Voodoo3 2000 to pack its bags and excitedly plop the shiny wonder with blue heatsinks into the AGP slot. Boot up. Drool at graphics. Yell at sound card. Yes, friends, my SB Live has decided not to produce any...

    Hard Drive Transfer Speed

Just to check one more thing: Is the drive running in ?compatibility mode? (I?m not sure if that?s in XP still, but worth a shot? in 98, it?s in the System>Performance tab). I?m not sure how you would fix this if it is the problem, but it can really cause slowdowns.

    Refresh rate stuck at 60hz

As for the drivers: maybe some program messed it up, or something in Windows messed up. It's hard to say exactly. Somehow, the INF file that was needed got lost. As for the refresh rates: I'd say: "the higher, the better!" Go for the highest refresh you can at your desired resolution, since it...
