I'm thinking of getting a new hard drive strictly for media storage/playback. Given that I have a very modest system, would getting a 5400 noticalbly decrease performance?

Just out of curiousity, last time I was in the market for a hard drive (granted, it was 3 years ago) everyone said western digitals crapped out after only a couple of years...were they bullshit or has WD improved? (As I"m thinking of buying an mp3/movie hard drive right now)

yeah, the Live doesn't work, or doesn't seem to. I'm not really much of a techie, but I can get most hardwear to work on the base level, and neither I nor my dad could get soundblaster live he bought to work in mine or his machine, so that's out, unless someone has a fix for me. As for 5.1...
