Thanks for the suggestion KerryMunro.
Unfortunately for me, the "redial if line is dropped" box wasn't checked. Something else is responsible for this behavior.

When XP runs some programs (such as my son's games), it seems to run a program called "generic host process for Win32 services" (GHP) It also runs this when XP starts up. As far as I can tell this is what it is supposed to do.
BUT, this program (GHP) has started to dial the modem and connect to...
Thinks to check out before you switch to XP:
1. Will all your programs run on XP?
A number of my son's games will not work in XP no matter what is done (different compatibility modes, etc). I think there are lists out there for what works and what doesn't work in XP.
2. Will all your hardware...
I'm using the ASUS board with an added Promise IDE controller. I have 6 drives connected with no problems.
I've only overclocked "a bit" but have had no problems at all with it.
One minor complaint: the IDE cable that came with the mobo was bad and every few days would lead to currupted system...
A cult exists worshiping the old IBM PS/2 keyboard. It was the best ever made. It can be bought used for a few bucks. A used PS/2 keyboard will last far longer than most current-day keyboards bought new.

"Market forces" responsible for increase in DRAM prices? No so.
The price rise appears to be the result of collusion amongst memory
producers. The activity that has led to the price rise is illegal in the US.
From EETimes (http://www.eetimes.com/semi/news/OEG20020130S0028):

Are you getting BSOD with error messages? If so, what are they?
Or are you getting complete freezes with no feedback?
Or does the machine reboot itself on you?

What utilities (for XP) exist for checking for problems with RAM? And, one that checks disk controller for flaws.
I'm getting occasional crashes in XP (using ASUS p4t-e with 512 rambus; audigy, geforce 2) that seem possibly related to RAM or disk controller problems. For instance...
I randomly get the following problem in XP:
I start an application and the application loads. But the colors of the application appear a bit faded; worse, the application doesn't respond to any keyboard or mouse clicks.
It can only be shut down by windows task manager. If I start up the...
I have just returned from XP hell with a P4 1.6, Asus p4t-e system. Constant crashes and BSOD galore. I even had multiple crashes during installs forcing me to start over.
By trial and error I found that I could get a stable system only after a fresh install (after reformat) if I rebooted...
I'm having the exact same problems with XP (BSOD and application crashes constantly in anything that is kinda 3d). And I have about the same hardware (P4 1.6 with P4t-e but gforce 2).
I've done everything I can think. My next step is a clean install of XP. (Third in a week!).

I've just built a new computer running XP. Most of my son's games don't run but lead to an XP message that the program has run into problems and has shut down and would I like to send information to MS about this crash.
Normal business applications run okay (Word, Excel, Photoshop...

<< Those are pretty decent starting prices, although I'm a little surprised to see MSI charge $173 (shipping charges included?). I thought the i845 chipsets were cheap to produce.. . . >>
This $173 price is based upon the yen price (about 20,000 yen) transformed into dollars using the current...
". . .we are trying to determine what is meant by "dual-channel" for the i845D. For example, the single-channel rambus boards (like the i820) didn't require that rimms to be installed in pairs; but the dual-channel rambus boards (i850, i840) did require pairs."
Descriptions of MSI and FIC...
