I think you need to decide. If you want the best for your dollar, go with the Dell. If you want to have a little bit more flexibility, go with the homeade system.

You should not have any problem as long as they are on the same frequency band. For example, it will not work if one is on a 2.4a ghz. and the other is on a 2.4b ghz.band.
I would definitly build my own system. It is a good experience. Plus for the same price of a dell, you could build an awesome machine! And I agree that while it takes time, it certainly gives you 100% more flexibility. I love to overclock, so I would hate to have a dell.
