Discussion General CPU µArch Research Thread

Thanks! I easily could have written more, but there was a lot to get through so I tried to just get the basics of each technology. I ended up with 38 references by the time I was done. It was really interesting learning about all the new technologies that are available to continue increasing...

Discussion General CPU µArch Research Thread

Since I haven't seen an explanation of the upcoming process nodes in one place, I ended up writing a paper about it for my Masters a few years ago. This topic seems to be a place that might have some interest in it. In case anyone wants to read my terrible attempt at explaining the current...

What to do with my old computer games?

IMO the small amount of money you get from selling them isn't worth the hassle of doing it. I've regretted every sale I've made, and the money I got was never worth it.

Question Intel or AMD for specific type of desktop

Ranks are sets of parallel memory chips that can either read or write during any particular clock. Having more than 1 rank per DIMM allows them to do both at the same time (one rank reading, while another rank writes) effectively increasing the bandwidth. Here is a good video that explains it...

    Question VR

It depends on what games you play, but I had to upgrade from a RX580 to a 5700XT to play No Man's Sky on VR. The standard VR games played fine on the RX580 though. I am also using an Oculus Rift S.

    Cyberpunk 2077

I get through almost every mission without being seen. I do take out all the enemies with non-lethal takedown moves though, except the minibosses. I pretty much play it like Hitman, or Deux Ex, and avoid killing if at all possible. You level up your stealth very quickly in the game this way...

nVidia blocks Hardware Unboxed due to rasterization focus. Update: nVidia retracts.

Rollo and Wreckage are the reason the last nVidia card I bought was the TNT2. I had mostly forgotten about the shady nature of nVidia before this thread, which reminded me of all the terrible things they've done over the past 20 years. I was actually considering getting a 3080 in the Spring...

nVidia blocks Hardware Unboxed due to rasterization focus. Update: nVidia retracts.

Have you been contacted by AEG, nVidia, or any other marketing firm to post on sites for nVidia? If so, it is Anandtech policy that you must disclose that or be banned.

nVidia blocks Hardware Unboxed due to rasterization focus. Update: nVidia retracts.

This is completely insane. Luckily they don't have a monopoly, and there is some pretty good competition. I will have a difficult time buying an Nvidia product after this.

Question Speculation: RDNA2 + CDNA Architectures thread

My point was that if it doesn't upscale perfectly, then it won't down scale perfectly either. If adding 50% more CUs and increasing clock speed by 20% doesn't increase performance by 60%, then doing the reverse won't decrease performance by 37.5%. It will have similar scaling downward and would...

Question Speculation: RDNA2 + CDNA Architectures thread

You said that it doesn't scale well, but your linear extrapolation assumes perfect scaling. You should be able to calculate scaling based on 6800XT to 6900XT scores, and use that to scale down at a better rate. Then you can extrapolate the data from the 6800 with the adjusted clock speeds. Of...

An example of bad AMD driver code

I remember this being an issue switching from Nvidia to AMD a few years ago. It was so bad that people said you needed to do a fresh install of the OS to get rid of the Nvidia code.

    Question Anandtech GPU reviews?

He may have just gotten an account to try to figure out why there weren't any reviews. No other site has in depth reviews like Anandtech, so when they are missing it, people try to find out if they are still doing them. In this case it appears this is a temporary outage, but I don't know.
