There is a flash of light that occurs frequently at the bottom of the screen in the taskbar of my friend's netbook (Toshiba NB205-N313/P) around the icon for the Kindle app.

I have a 2009 Toshiba NB205-N313/P that I am upgrading and sending to a friend as a gift.
It only had 1GB of RAM and was running XP. So I bought a new 2GB chip and put it in, and installed a new SSD and did a fresh install of Window 7 Pro.
The HDD that I replaced was a Toshiba 160GB 5400RPM...

You were exactly right. It was a BIOS setting. The USB 2.0 Controller was disabled. We just enabled it and we were good to go!

The fix was to update the BIOS. But first I had to put it in the fridge for about 15 min. Yeah, I know. Crazy. But it worked. They talk about this fix on the last page of the forum thread that I linked to in my original post. Hope this helps someone!
