Well, to solve the problem which also happened in a few other games I got myself an old Soundblaster Audigy with 64 bit drivers, disabled onboard sound and my son is happy again.

Thankyou, but I prefer to use the onboard chip as 64bit drivers for soundcards are not exactly easy to find. The mobo by the way is Asus P5W DH Deluxe
