Edit: So, I tried hooking my PS4 up to the same receiver, and it worked perfectly in 7.1. That led me that this is a PS3 specific issue, and that the Onkyo is working properly. I did a little further digging and found the answer on another forum... apparently the PS3 can't handle True HD Audio...
I understand what you mean, but my 7.1 G35 headset does a really great job of simulating it, even with two drivers. I was hoping to find a receiver that could do the same thing with connected headphones.
I guess I'll just have to buy a separate surround sound headset that's compatible with as many of my consoles as possible... it just seems like it would make sense for a receiver to be able to output to a surround sound headphone... guess we're just not there yet. I'll probably pick up that...
