Try using the short names of the technologies mentioned:
G-Lite and VP and VC.
As far as I know, most modems support this.
Also, stay away from USB based modems! Use an ethernet one even if it costs a little extra. I used to work for an ISP here in Israel and USB ADSL modems made my life...
What happens if you take the LinkSys out of the picture completelly? Does this still happen?
If the only issues are browsing and usenet performance, do tracert google.com when this happens. If the pings are still tolerable, it may be some weird preasure on port 80. If the server IP doesn't...
If you write a little more about the IPs in the network, what changes were done when they changes providers and such I could probably help more. Also, PELarson is right. Get a decent NAT device to share your Internet connection. Having one with a built-in print-server doesn't hurt either.
It would probably do. What you need to look at in the specs is the "concurrent connections". I couldn't find the info for this one.
