use msconfig ,sysedit and win.ini and check invalid or unnecessary entries.

if u cant fix bakup everything and reinstall your xp
if u want more performance set your swapfile to another hdd (the hdd not in use) but it works efficiently on scsi. limiting swap file a reasonable level decreases the burden on scsi/hdd if u want to get max performance from swap file it must be maximum %7 or 9 of the capacity of disk .
there must be really a problem with your pc .
