I believe you HAVE to do that in order for the system to boot. When I was building my pc, I tried starting the computer without it plugged in, all it did was scream like a stuck pig, no screen or anything.

Test the system with your friends vid card, if it does the same thing .. youv'e gotta keep investigating. If it runs fine, RMA your video card.
